Extending the firm versus industry debate into social enterprises: A multilevel analysis on Spanish cooperatives 2008–2023
(2025-08-18) Doucet Sánchez, Pablo Francisco; Solórzano García, Marta; European Regional Development Fund; Agencia Estatal de Investigación (España)
An important debate in the field of strategy and industrial organization economics has long focused on whether the industry environment or firm idiosyncrasies have a greater impact on firm performance. However, cooperatives have been excluded from this inquiry, despite profits being the primary means to achieve their social objectives. This article examines the relative impact of firm and industry effects on cooperative profitability and compares these effects with those in investor-owned firms (IOFs). Additionally, it analyses how generalized economic adversity impacts the relative importance of firm and industry effects on cooperative profitability and compares these changes with those in IOFs. Using multilevel modelling, the study analyses around 8,678 Spanish cooperatives and equivalent IOFs from 2008 to 2023. The findings indicate that industry-level factors account for a greater share of profitability variation in cooperatives than in IOFs, whereas firm-specific effects are comparatively weaker. These patterns are accentuated during periods of economic recession, suggesting that cooperatives are more sensitive to sectoral conditions under adverse macroeconomic contexts.

Human resource management as key pillar of company strategy: Analysis of the line managers’ perception
(Cambridge University Press, 2019-04-26) Navío Marco, Julio; Solórzano García, Marta; Palencia González, Francisco Javier
There is a growing literature devoted to analyzing the strategic aspects of HR functions in organizations and also the mechanisms and effectiveness of implementing HR practices. The increasingly frequent involvement of the companies´ line managers in HR activities leads us to investigate about the strategic value that these managers grant HR. Our research focuses on the line managers' perception of the strategic importance of HR (versus the perception of HR managers themselves) as a relevant factor in the proper line managers´ involvement in the execution of HR-related tasks. If the line managers do not perceive the relevance and strategic importance HR and its key role in company strategy and performance, it is difficult to guarantee their commitment and effectiveness in HR management implementation. Through a double survey (line manager and HR managers) to one hundred companies, we verified discrepancies in the HR versus line managers valuation, a lower valuation by the line managers, and we draw some useful conclusions for a successful implementation of HR practices.

Innovative approaches to social impact measurement: a focus on the potential of artificial intelligence solutions
(Emerald insight, 2024-09-05) Abad Itoiz, Nerea; Solórzano García, Marta; Hernández-Mari, Daniel
Purpose – The existing literature highlights challenges in measuring social impact within Social and Solidarity Economy organisations, particularly regarding the Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodology. This paper aims to address the barriers to SROI implementation while exploring the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing the measurement of social impact. Design/methodology/approach – This review-based paper synthesises research on SROI methodology limitations and recent AI developments, while focusing on ethical considerations. Drawing from these domains, the study constructs a conceptual framework to guide future research. Findings – The study identifies necessary enhancements to existing AI systems for social impact measurement and explores how advances in generative AI could refine current tools and address SROI constraints. It advocates for open AI models to address ethical concerns. Originality – This study pioneers the integration of social impact assessment and AI, an innovative intersection in the academic literature. The growing disparity between academia and the rapidly evolving AI industry is highlighted and scholarly discourse is enriched through theoretical deliberations and innovative technological solutions.

Is ethical management of human resources inherent to social enterprises? European tradition model versus Anglo-Saxon model
(Inderscience, 2019-05-06) Fernández de Tejada Muñoz, Victoria; Palencia González, Francisco Javier; Saavedra, Irene; Solórzano García, Marta
Social entrepreneurship has become an economic reality with great potential to provide a response to the existing social challenges. In this paper we identify two models of social enterprise, and we provide, for the first time, evidence from the human resource management of social enterprises in Spain. This allows us to analyse whether these social enterprises manage their human resources in an ethical way, and whether a different ethical human resource management exists in the two models. We have designed a questionnaire using the ethical practices of the ethical human resource management model as a basis. The results reveal that social enterprises in Spain manage their human resources ethically and a difference does not exist between the two models identified. We conclude by outlining the implications for a better understanding of ethical practices in human resource management in social enterprises.

Student´s social e-reputation (“karma”) as motivational factor in MOOC learning
(Taylor & Francis, 2021-04-03) Navío Marco, Julio; Solórzano García, Marta
In this paper, we analyse the role of the student’s digital reputation as a motivational factor for successfully completing Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). After a review of the academic literature on the role that the student’s reputation plays in community learning and to understand the role of involving the student that new techniques of gamification have taken in virtual learning, an empirical analysis is performed on the basis of data from a pioneer MOOC of Social Entrepreneurship (5016 registered students, 3250 of whom actually started). Using Classification and Regression Trees (CARTs) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), we conclude that social reputation is a key factor for the student in successfully completing the course, and that the student’s retention is, along with his e-reputation (“karma”), directly related to his degree of participation, the rewards received, and his correspondence with peers. This shows that one of the factors that explain the student’s MOOC completion is his degree of interaction with other students, and particularly his reputation among them.

Serial acquirers' strategy in the telecommunications sector: integration or indigestion?
(2020-03-02) Navío Marco, Julio; Solórzano García, Marta; Vicente Vírseda, Juan Antonio
This article analyses the performance of the serial operations of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in the telecommunications sector, seeking to understand if the serial M&A strategy leads to stockholder wealth maximisation, and the role of the acquirer's characteristics and its behaviour as an acquirer. After calculating the abnormal returns of telecommunications M&As from 2000 to 2010 and evaluating the long-term value creation/destruction of these operations, neural network and clustering techniques are used to study the serial acquirer's behaviour versus occasional acquirers, to understand the factors influencing the success of the operations and to classify the acquirers into different types. Among other findings, we identify relevant variables that can make the strategy of the serial acquirer successful, and observe signals of indigestion in a certain type of serial acquirer, showing post-merge value destruction. We reflect that the capacity of an organisation to assimilate its previous acquisitions tends to be limited.

The influence of intrinsic motivation and contextual factors on MOOC students’ social entrepreneurial intentions
(Taylor and Francis, 2020-06-01) Solórzano García, Marta; Navío Marco, Julio; Laguía González, Ana
This paper looks in more depth at an analysis of MOOC students’ social entrepreneurial intentions, their profiles and motivations, especially as regards the tensions between internal and external motivations and the influence of the environment on the decision to set up a social enterprise. It also offers insights into online education for social entrepreneurs, as we believe that a better understanding of such training and its participants may help to stimulate social entrepreneurship from the educational sphere. Using a large sample obtained from a survey of 1457 respondents, our study offers a new perspective on distance learning social entrepreneurship students’ socio-demographic characteristics and the importance of both their desire for self-fulfilment and the influence of their environment.

Fostering student teachers’ agency in distance education: a service-learning approach in computer-supported collaborative learning environments
    (2025-05-05) Solórzano García, Marta
One challenge facing computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) is to understand how collaboration occurs, what factors carry an influence on achieving collaborations that generate the proposed learning objectives, and how to promote CSCL. This study examines how service learning (SL) in teacher education in CSCL environments can support the agency capacity of student teachers. We focus on the ability of SL to help build a community of apprentices, providing them with opportunities to make decisions and participate in collaborative learning. A qualitative content analysis is performed on the information contained in the learning diaries of the student teachers in a CSCL environment at a major distance education university. The study demonstrates that student teachers’ agency emerges from their active participation in the learning community, their leadership and responsibility for their own learning and that of the rest of the community, and the development of their professional identity as future teachers.
