Structure and Function in Catalogic Discourse: the Case of Iliadic Androktasíai
    (DeGruyter, 2025-08-22) Sánchez Bernet, Andrea
This study aims at defining the androktasíai or killing lists of the Iliad taking functional and construction grammar as a methodological background. The information structure of warrior deaths catalogues, as well as that of their constituents on an intraclausal level, follows a pattern regularly shifting the focus and the topic to different elements of the battle scene. Those same constructions and patterns also appear in more narrative sections or non-catalogic battle scenes, which include extended descriptions and employ different narratological tools. It can be concluded that all battle death lists in the Iliad follow an identical information structure despite changes in the wording, thus showcasing how Homeric epics introduce variations into a stable scene type.

DISCOvering Spanish Sonnets: A Circular Reading Experience
(DE GRUYTER, 2022-12-19) Bermúdez Sabel, Helena; Ruiz Fabo, Pablo; Martínez Cantón, Clara Isabel
With DISCO, the DIachronic Spanish Sonnet COrpus, we collected 4085 sonnets, from the 15th to the 19th centuries, including canonical and lesser-studied authors from both Spain and Latin- America, with detailed author metadata, metrics, rhyme-scheme and enjambment annotations. The dataset is available on public repositories, offered in plain text and TEI, and enriched with RDFa, a linked-data format. The corpus was intended for research and teaching, as well as for non-specialist use. Some questions naturally emerge: How can we easily navigate this corpus and its rich metadata? How can we identify trends thanks to its annotations? How can users not proficient in XML query languages and linked data benefit from such a dataset? To address these issues, we have created DISCOver, a user-friendly web interface to explore the DISCO corpus. It was conceived as a means to help students, researchers, and readers overall, making the corpus accessible to a wider audience. The interface displays literary annotations on individual texts as well as quantitative data on user-defined subcorpora. In turn, from the aggregated data we can go back to the texts the data are based on. Thus, the interface helps us assess the features of individual texts in the context of quantitative data about larger parts of the corpus, and vice-versa. It also helps us nuance hypotheses based on aggregate data by consulting the texts they are derived from.

Roman Marble Statues in Tarraco (Hispania Citerior): imports and local production
(Sonderschriften des Österreichischen Archäologischen Institutes in Wien (SoSchrÖAI), 2025-01-01) Ruiz, Julio C.
The distinction between imported sculptures and works produced in local workshops is easier in large ensembles, as is the case in Tarraco, capital of the province Hispania citerior. The aim of this work is to assess the hypotheses formulated by various researchers, based on several criteria. These criteria are, mainly, the degree of fidelity with respect to the original model, the raw materials used and the stylistic quality of the works. Attention has been paid to the type of representation (divinities or portraits), dimensions and qualitative aspects of the marbles used. The results of this study show that some of the statues were probably sculpted in local workshops. However, many sculptures were quite likely made in foreign workshops, both in Rome and in the Eastern Mediterranean. This study provides new data on the production process of Roman marble sculptures in this important city of Hispania.

Le statue dei defunti nel paesaggio funerario di Tarraco
(BAR Publishing, 2022-01-01) Ruiz, Julio C.
This article deals with the sculptures from funerary contexts of Tarraco, capital of the province Hispania citerior. These are funerary portraits which were placed in Roman times in their respective funerary monuments. The aim is to obtain a more precise reconstruction of the funerary landscape of Tarraco from the preserved sculptures. For this purpose, data on their finding circumstances are mainly considered. We also reflect on its chronology, iconography, and raw material. Most of the funerary portraits come from the area of the early Christian necropolis, where they had been reused. The provenance of another group of statues is unknown, although they most likely come from the former area. We also know a bust of the Hadrian period from a different area of the town. Most of the sculptures are made of local stones and date back to the second half of the first century BC. The remaining portraits and iconic torsos belong to different moments of the High Empire and are carved in marble. The latter generally are preserved in worse condition due to their reuse in the tombs of the Late Antique period.

Marble fragments of monumental inscriptions from the Tarraco circus (Hispania citerior)
(Dokuz Eylül University Publications, 2023-03-15) Ruiz, Julio C.; Lapuente, pilar; Gorostidi Pi, Diana; Brilli, Mauro
Though the architectural configuration of the Roman circus of Tarraco is well known, until now there has hardly been any information about its epigraphic program. The archaeological excavations carried out recently have brought to light numerous fragments of monumental inscriptions in white marbles. They exhibit some characteristics that indicate them to be official inscriptions of monumental dimensions. No fragments fit together, but most of them present common parameters which allow them to be separated into at least two different groups. Macroscopically, differences in whiteness and in the quality of carving have been observed. To be certain of the common geological nature of marbles from the same group, they have been investigated under optical microscope and cathodoluminescence equipment. Complementary C and O stable isotopes have been analysed in order to attribute the samples to a particular ancient marble quarry. This contribution will lead us to progress further in the study of this architectural complex.

La villa de Parets Delgades (La Selva del Camp, Tarragona): secuencia cronológica, arquitectura y programa decorativo
(Edipuglia, 2025-01-16) Ruiz, Julio C.; Fortuny Mendo, Karen
The site of Parets Delgades (La Selva del Camp, Tarragona) reflects the overlapping of several historical phases. A hermitage, documented since the Middle Ages, still stands today. This structure sits atop a preceding Roman villa, which has been minimally explored through limited excavations in the first half of the 20th century. It has been suggested that this villa was established in the 1st century B.C., but it underwent significant expansion in the 4th century A.D. The residential complex was organized around a peristyle, with adjacent rooms featuring elaborate mosaic floors. The development of this site remains poorly understood, though it is presumed to have been occupied until Late Antiquity. This assumption is supported by the discovery of a capital dating back to the 6th century, associated with a purported Visigothic basilica.

An Efficient Feature Selection Framework Using Genetic Algorithms for AI-Driven IDS in IoT Environments
(Springer, 2025-12-01) García Merino, José Carlos; Tobarra Abad, María de los Llanos; Robles Gómez, Antonio; Pastor Vargas, Rafael; Vidal Balboa, Pedro
The increasing concern over Internet of Things (IoT) cybersecurity, driven by the growing number of connected devices and their vulnerability to attacks, has intensified the demand for effective Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs). In recent years Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions has emerged as a common approach in modern cybersecurity systems, offering powerful tools for detecting complex patterns and threats. However, the limited computing capabilities of IoT environments require models that are not only accurate but also resource-efficient. Feature selection (FS) plays a key role in this context, but traditional techniques such as the Chi-2 test and mutual information focus only on predictive performance, overlooking important practical concerns like inference time and model size. In this work, we propose a novel FS approach based on a custom scoring function that combines accuracy with penalties for inference time and model size. This metric is integrated into a Genetic Algorithm framework to guide the search for optimal feature subsets. The proposed method is evaluated on the NF-ToN-IoT-v2 dataset against standard techniques. Results demonstrate that our approach achieves competitive predictive performance while significantly reducing inference time and model size, highlighting the relevance of considering deployment-oriented metrics in the FS process

An Approach for an Affective Educational Recommendation Model
(Springer, 2014-01-01) Santos, Olga C.; González Boticario, Jesús; Manjarrés Riesco, Ángeles
There is agreement in the literature that affect influences learning. In turn, addressing affective issues in the recommendation process has shown their ability to increase the performance of recommender systems in non-educational scenarios. In our work, we combine both research lines and describe the SAERS approach to model affective educational recommendations. This affective recommendation model has been initially validated with the application of the TORMES methodology to specific educational settings. We report 29 recommendations elicited in 12 scenarios by applying this methodology. Moreover, a UML formalized version of the recommendations model which can describe the recommendations elicited is presented in the paper.
