    A Failed Cross-Validation Study on the Relationship between LIWC Linguistic Indicators and Personality: Exemplifying the Lack of Generalizability of Exploratory Studies

    (1) Background: Previous meta-analytic research found small to moderate relationships between the Big Five personality traits and different linguistic computational indicators. However, previous studies included multiple linguistic indicators to predict personality from an exploratory framework. The aim of this study was to conduct a cross-validation study analyzing the relationships between language indicators and personality traits to test the generalizability of previous results; (2) Methods: 643 Spanish undergraduate students were tasked to write a self-description in 500 words (which was evaluated with the LIWC) and to answer a standardized Big Five questionnaire. Two different analytical approaches using multiple linear regression were followed: first, using the complete data and, second, by conducting different cross-validation studies; (3) Results: The results showed medium effect sizes in the first analytical approach. On the contrary, it was found that language and personality relationships were not generalizable in the cross-validation studies; (4) Conclusions: We concluded that moderate effect sizes could be obtained when the language and personality relationships were analyzed in single samples, but it was not possible to generalize the model estimates to other samples. Thus, previous exploratory results found on this line of research appear to be incompatible with a nomothetic approach.

    Correlation between automatic and manual methods of right ventricle and left atrium strain quantification

    Introduction Myocardial strain quantification by speckle-tracking of the right ventricle (RV) and left atrium (LA) can be performed by manual or automatic methods. Purpose The objective of our study is to evaluate the degree of correlation between manual measurement method and automatic software used in our imaging laboratory, in a population of healthy individuals and patients with cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR). Methods Fifty-seven individuals were included, 30 patients with ATTR and 27 healthy volunteers, who underwent a transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) from January to December 2019. Classic echocardiographic parameters and myocardial deformation were obtained according to the ASE/ EACVI guidelines. Global and free wall longitudinal strain of the RV (RVGLS, RVFWLS) and LA global strain (LAGS) analysis were obtained using speckle-tracking with two different software: QLAB Philips 10.7 and AutoSTRAIN Tomtec. Measurements analysis was performed by two experienced echocardiographers. Correlation and reproducibility analysis was performed using Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. Results Seventy-two percent were male and average age was 63±20 years. Linear correlation of RVGLS, RVFWLS and LAGS measurements with both methods reached statistical significance (table). This correlation was stronger and more reliable in the case of the LAGS. The attached figure shows the correlation between the different software in both groups. Conclusions AutoSTRAIN Tomtec automatic measurement method had higher reliability and correlation comparing to manual measurements performed by QLAB 10.7, especially in LA measurements. The obtained results, the application speed and the less operator's dependence of this automatic software support its routine use for RV and LA strain quantification.

    Are valence and arousal related to the development of amodal representations of words? A computational study

    In this study, we analyzed the relationship between the amodal (semantic) development of words and two popular emotional norms (emotional valence and arousal) in English and Spanish languages. To do so, we combined the strengths of semantics from vector space models (vector length, semantic diversity, and word maturity measures), and feature-based models of emotions. First, we generated a common vector space representing the meaning of words at different developmental stages (five and four developmental stages for English and Spanish, respectively) using the Word Maturity methodology to align different vector spaces. Second, we analyzed the amodal development of words through mixed-effects models with crossed random effects for words and variables using a continuous time metric. Third, the emotional norms were included as covariates in the statistical models. We evaluated more than 23,000 words, whose emotional norms were available for more than 10,000 words, in each language separately. Results showed a curve of amodal development with an increasing linear effect and a small quadratic deceleration. A relevant influence on the amodal development of words was found only for emotional valence (not for arousal), suggesting that positive words have an earlier amodal development and a less pronounced semantic change across early lifespan.

    Usefulness of strain imaging to determine prognosis in pulmonary hypertension

    Abstract Introduction Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is defined as mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) ≥25 mmHg at rest, measured by right heart catheterization (RHC). Purpose To describe classical and myocardial deformation echocardiographic parameters in patients with established PH and to identify prognostic variables Methods We prospectively enrolled 76 patients with mPAP ≥25 mmHg undergoing RHC between 2017 and 2018. All subjects underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) according to the latest ASE/EACVI guidelines the same day of the RHC. Strain analysis was carried out by speckle-tracking echocardiography (QLAB 10.7, Philips). Clinical events during the follow-up were: acute heart failure hospitalization, cardiac transplant and all-cause mortality. Results Mean age was 59±12, 43.4% were women and 49 patients (64.5%) belonged to group 2 of PH. The median follow-up was 288 (ICR 92–534) days. Total number of events was 42 (55.3%, 9 deaths). Variables associated to events are shown in Table 1. All classic LV and RV systolic function and strain parameters were associated with a worse prognosis, being free-wall RV longitudinal strain (RVLS) the only one that remained as a prognostic factor in mutivariate analysis. Other variables associated with a worse prognosis were PCP>15 mmHg and NT-proBNP>1800, the latter being independent predictor of events. The attached figure shows event-free survival curves for the global population divided according to whether or not they belong to group II PH. Conclusions Our data highlight the prognostic value of free-wall RVLS and NT-proBNP in patients with established PH. NT-ProBNP was only useful in group II PH while free-wall RVLS identified patients with a higher risk of events in both groups, mainly in patients with heart disease

    Role of Right Ventricular Strain Measured by Two-Dimensional Echocardiography in the Diagnosis of Cardiac Amyloidosis

    Background Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) causes restrictive cardiomyopathy usually associated with a poor prognosis. Two subtypes predominate: systemic light-chain CA (ALCA) and transthyretin-derived CA (either wild type transthyretin amyloidosis [TTRwt] or mutant transthyretin amyloidosis [TTRm]). Left ventricular (LV) apical sparing has been extensively studied using speckle-tracking echocardiography for diagnosis, but the right ventricular (RV) deformation pattern has not been described. The aims of this study were to characterize RV involvement in patients with CA and to identify parameters that may help in the differential diagnosis between ALCA and transthyretin-derived CA subtypes. Methods Seventy-eight patients with CA (47 with ALCA, 20 with TTRwt, and 11 with TTRm) and 24 healthy control subjects were included. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) was analyzed in 16 LV and six RV segments. LV and RV apical ratios (ARs) were obtained. GLS was expressed as an absolute value. Results LV GLS and free-wall RV longitudinal strain were impaired in all patients (LV GLS: 11.9 ± 2.9% in ALCA, 12.5 ± 3.8% in TTRwt, 14.9 ± 2.7% in TTRm, and 21.9 ± 2.6% in control subjects [P < .01]; free-wall RV longitudinal strain: 13.1 ± 6.8%, 14.9 ± 4.5%, 17.2 ± 3.4%, and 22.1 ± 3.1%, respectively [P < .01]). LV and RV ARs were higher in ALCA compared with both TTRwt, TTRm, and control subjects (LV AR: 1.1 ± 0.2, 0.8 ± 0.2, 0.9 ± 0.1, and 0.7 ± 0.1, respectively [P < .001]; RV AR: 1.1 ± 0.2, 0.6 ± 0.2, 0.6 ± 0.1, and 0.6 ± 0.1, respectively [P < .001]). Cutoff values of LV AR > 0.96 and RV AR > 0.8 showed high accuracy to differentiate between ALCA and transthyretin-derived CA. Conclusions RV dysfunction is common in patients with CA. Analysis of RV strain showed an apical sparing pattern, as previously described in the left ventricle, with a higher AR as a specific finding in patients with ALCA. RV AR may be a parameter that can differentiate the subtypes of amyloidosis on the basis of speckle-tracking echocardiographic analysis.

    QT interval estimation in patients with right bundle branch block using validated formulas for left bundle branch block

    BACKGROUND Adequate measurement of the QT interval is of paramount importance in order to identify patients at higher risk for ventricular arrhythmias. Previous studies have described different methods to estimate baseline QT in patients with left bundle branch block (LBBB). However, the evidence regarding the assessment of QT interval in the setting of right bundle branch block (RBBB) is scarce. PURPOSE We aimed to analyze the feasibility and accuracy of the different formulas described for LBBB in the estimation of the QT interval in RBBB. METHODS We enrolled patients who underwent left sided electrophysiologic procedures. All patients were in sinus rhythm and had narrow QRS. Pacing was performed from the left atrial appendage for baseline measurements, and from the left aspect of the interventricular septum (selective capture of the left bundle was attempted) to measure RBBB QT and QRS. Pacing cycle length was 800 ms or slightly below patients´ intrinsic rhythm at both locations. Measurements were performed manually (using digital calipers) according to current recommendations and corrected using Bazett. Validated formulas for LBBB QT considered are described in table 1. RESULTS 50 patients (42 cryoballoon pulmonary veins isolation (PVI), 4 radiofrequency PVI, 4 concealed left accessory pathways). 70% were male. Mean age was 62 ± 11 years old. Left ventricle ejection fraction was 58 ± 10%. 66% and 60% of the patients were taking betablockers and antiarrhythmic drugs, respectively. Mean pacing cycle length was 707 ± 99 ms. Baseline measurements: QRS 95 ± 10, QT 391 ± 36, QTc 467 ± 39 ms. RBBB measurements: QRS 165 ± 21, QT 448 ± 46, QTc 531 ± 52 ms. Correlations between baseline and estimated QTc were good for all the formulas (table 1). Reliability analysis showed that both Yankelson and Wang methods had the highest intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) when trying to estimate baseline QTc. CONCLUSIONS Previously described formulas for LBBB exhibit marked differences regarding reliability in the estimation of QTc interval in the setting of RBBB. According to our results, Yankelson’s method shows the most consistent agreement when estimating baseline QTc interval in patients with RBBB.

    Quantum projections on conceptual subspaces: A deeper dive into methodological challenges and opportunities

    In alignment with the distributional hypothesis of language, the work “Quantum Projections on Conceptual Subspaces” (Martínez-Mingo A, Jorge-Botana G, Martinez-Huertas JÁ, et al. Quantum projections on conceptual subspaces. Cogn Syst Res 2023; 82: 101154) proposed a methodology for generating conceptual subspaces from textual information based on previous work (Martinez-Mingo A, Jorge-Botana G and Olmos R. Quantum approach for similarity evaluation in LSA vector space models. 2020). These subspaces enable the utilization of the quantum model of similarity put forth by Pothos and Busemeyer (Pothos E, Busemeyer J. A quantum probability explanation for violations of symmetry in similarity judgments. In Proceedings of the annual meeting of the cognitive science society, 2011, Vol. 33, No. 33), allowing for the empirical examination of the violations of assumptions concerning symmetry and triangular inequality (Tversky A. Features of similarity. Psychol Rev 1977; 84: 327–352; Yearsley JM, Barque-Duran A, Scerrati E, et al. The triangle inequality constraint in similarity judgments. Prog Biophys Mol Biol 2017; 130: 26–32), as well as the diagnosticity effect (Tversky A. Features of similarity. Psychol Rev 1977; 84: 327–352; Yearsley JM, Pothos EM, Barque-Duran A, et al. Context effects in similarity judgments. J Exp Psychol Gen 2022; 151: 711–717), within a data-driven environment. These psychological biases, deeply studied by authors such as Tversky and Kahneman, inform us about the limitations of modeling psychological similarity measures using tools from classical geometry. This commentary aims to offer methodological clarifications, discuss theoretical and practical implications, and speculate on future directions in this field of research. Concretely, it aims to propose the use of different contours (conceptual or contextual) to generate the subspaces, which lead to subspaces of terms or contexts. Once these contours are defined, a differentiation is proposed between Aggregated Terms Subspaces (ATSs), Aggregated Contexts Subspaces (ACSs), and Aggregated Features Subspaces (AFSs) depending on whether we define the subspaces by grouping the terms or contexts within the contour, or from the latent dimensions of the semantic space obtained in the contour window. Finally, new data is provided on the violation of the triangular inequality assumption through the application of the quantum similarity model to ATSs.

    Quantum projections on conceptual subspaces

    One of the main challenges of cognitive science is to explain the representation of conceptual knowledge and the mechanisms involved in evaluating the similarities between these representations. Theories that attempt to explain this phenomenon should account for the fact that conceptual knowledge is not static. In line with this thinking, many studies suggest that the representation of a concept changes depending on context. Traditionally, concepts have been studied as vectors within a geometric space, sometimes called Semantic-Vector Space Models (S-VSMs). However, S-VSMs have certain limitations in emulating human biases or context effects when the similarity of concepts is judged. Such limitations are related to the use of a classical geometric approach that represents a concept as a point in space. Recently, some theories have proposed the use of sequential projections of subspaces based on Quantum Probability Theory (Busemeyer and Bruza, 2012; Pothos et al., 2013). They argue that this theoretical approach may facilitate accounting for human similarity biases and context effects in a more natural way. More specifically, Pothos and Busemeyer (2011) proposed the Quantum Similarity Model (QSM) to determine expectation in conceptual spaces in a non-monotonic logic frame. To the best of our knowledge, previous data-driven studies have used the QSM subspaces in a unidimensional way. In this paper, we present a data-driven method to generate these conceptual subspaces in a multidimensional manner using a traditional S-VSM. We present an illustration of the method taking Tversky’s classical examples to explain the effects of Asymmetry, Triangular Inequality, and the Diagnosticity by means of sequential projections of those conceptual subspaces.

    Validation of the usefulness of 2-dimensional strain parameters to exclude acute rejection after heart transplantation: a multicenter study

    Introduction and objectives Two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography has emerged as a promising alternative to endomyocardial biopsy to rule out acute cellular rejection after orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT) in single center studies. In an original cohort, 15.5% and 17% of cutoff points for left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LVGLS) and free-wall right ventricular longitudinal strain, respectively, achieved 100% negative predictive value to exclude moderate or severe acute cellular rejection (ACR ≥ 2R). Our objective was to demonstrate the usefulness of speckle-tracking and validate these cutoff points in an external cohort. Methods A prospective, multicenter study that included patients who were monitored during their first year after OHT was conducted. Echocardiographic studies analyzed by local investigators were compared with simultaneous paired endomyocardial biopsies samples. Results A total of 501 endomyocardial biopsy-echocardiographic studies were included in 99 patients. ACR ≥ 2R was present in 7.4% of samples. LVGLS and free-wall right ventricular longitudinal strain were significantly reduced during ACR ≥ 2R on univariate analysis. On multivariate analysis, LVGLS was independently associated with the presence of ACR ≥ 2R. The original cutoff points demonstrated a negative predictive value of 94.3% to exclude ACR ≥ 2R. Conclusions This study maintained a strong negative predictive value to exclude ACR ≥ 2R after OHT and LVGLS was independently associated with the presence of ACR ≥ 2R. We propose the use of speckle-tracking, especially LVGLS, as part of the noninvasive diagnosis and management of ACR.

    Respuestas observables y estados ocultos en redes neuronales artificiales para razonar sobre aspectos cognitivos del lenguaje

    Para estudiar los procesos psicológicos involucrados en el lenguaje, la Ciencia Cognitiva indaga sobre las representaciones internas que se manejan a la hora de comprender o producir lenguaje. También postula las operaciones que modifican esas mismas representaciones dadas unas constricciones contextuales. Así, contexto y representación interactúan para crear significados. Con arreglo a esto, se ofrecen diferentes hipótesis de como el sistema cognitivo produce lenguaje. Al igual que existen metodologías experimentales para su estudio, distintas arquitecturas de redes neuronales artificiales permiten dotar a dichas hipótesis de un aparataje formal. En estos modelos, las representaciones y las operaciones participantes quedan exhaustivamente caracterizadas. Las redes neuronales recurrentes (RNNs) con mecanismos LSTM y los Transformers destacan como arquitecturas especialmente útiles para modelar la secuencialidad contextual presente en el lenguaje. Este número especial nos brinda la ocasión para explicar el uso de sus expresiones externas (sus salidas) como de sus representaciones internas (estados ocultos) para entender en términos cognitivos el efecto que tienen los cambios de expectativas en distintas marcas temporales de las frases. Para hacerlo, se ilustra la formalización mediante una RNN Secuencia-Secuencia con codificador y decodificador y se homologan sus mediciones a los experimentos de potenciales evento-relacionados (ERPs) en un tema nuclear en el lenguaje: la composicionalidad sistemática.
