The Influence of French on Society and Language in the Middle English Period

The history of languages is one of the most wonderful studies to such an extent that one could spend all his life trying to unveil the secrets of this unique and particular vehicle that has contributed to the construction of our societies since ancient times. Both oral and written languages have not only shaped the full history of humanity, but also evolved throughout the centuries. They have undergone substantial changes, whether semantic, syntactic or morphological, they are still in motion and will always be. With regard to English language, it is noticeable that among the Indo-European languages it may be the one that has undergone the deepest transformations since its origins that go back to the multiple invasions that England suffered from the Roman colonization until the Norman Conquest. The Norman Conquest of 1066 has left a considerable mark on the English landscape in the form of cathedrals, churches, and castles, and had a massive impact on the English language (Trotter 39). Both of these are still visible today. It is well known that a high percentage of the vocabulary of our Modern English is of French origin. Although the roots of the English language come from different origins, such as Celtic, German, Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian, French can be regarded as the key language that has subsequently influenced the development and the complexity of the world’s major “lingua franca” nowadays. The introduction of the French lexicon did not take place immediately, but was gradually adapted to the wants of daily matters. Initially, the language of the Norman conquerors including the specific vocabulary of the army was necessarily adopted. Then, it was followed by the French origin terms referring to law and administration, which were part of the elite that ruled England. Most French words are not to be deemed as loanwords in the conventional sense, that is to say words incorporated from a foreign language, but terms taken over into English at a time of sustained language contact between English and French, when the two languages coexisted in the country. At the same time, due to the strong influence of the various cultural aspects that the Normans brought to England, Old English terms derived from German lexicon started to disappear, given that the duplicity of two words meaning the same concept made often Old English vocabulary die out in favour of its French counterpart, although sometimes both terms were kept.
The production of four diphthongs in RP and Australian English: A comparative study

The pronunciation of English diphthongs varies across dialects. In Received Pronunciation, closing diphthongs are /eɪ/, /aɪ/, /əʊ/ and /aʊ/ whereas in Australian English rising diphthongs include /æɪ/, /ɑe/, /əʉ/ and /æɔ/, which are similar to Cockney and broad London. These accents from the south-east of England were the most predominant among the first Australian settlers, whose influence can be seen in the current production of diphthongs in Australian English. A small corpus of 5 RP and 8 Australian English speakers has been created in this dissertation by asking them to utter 8 carrier sentences which included specific words containing the required diphthongs. The recordings have been segmented and the words with the diphthongs have been analysed using the program Praat. The words analysed in this study exemplify how these diphthongs are produced differently in Received Pronunciation and in Australian English.

Audio description (AD) is a form of audiovisual translation related to accessibility. Its target audience are people with visual impairment. The aim of this work study is to relate AD to the translation of humour. In order to do this, we will present this discipline from one side and humour from another one through a theoretical framework, where we will also find a common ground of humour in AD. Afterwards, once the concepts are settled, we will try to show how humour is maintained (or not) in audio description. For this, a practical case study (grounded to the series “Workin´ Moms“) will be held in a second part of the paper. To end, we will present a series of conclusions, particular to the case study and general related to the topic. We will see what is relevant to be translated in order to maintain the humour from the image to the AD text, and which mechanisms the translator uses to achieve this goal.
The type of postmodern satire and its role in George Saunders’s short fiction

This work analyses the type of satire that George Saunders employs in his short fiction, in particular in its relation to the postmodernist movement and postmodernist theories on satire and its use in literature. It especially focuses on the theories of “degenerative,” “diffused” and “sincere” satire as the dominant types in contemporary American fiction. As a result, it examines how George Saunders’s distinct nature of satire is capable of generating an affective response in readers towards characters, simultaneously destabilizing and undermining preconceived ideas and beliefs which are based on well-established cultural myths and discourses.
The underpinnings of dystopia: a cognitive poetic approach to Huxley’s “Brave New World”

La gran obra de literatura distópica de Aldous Huxley, Un Mundo Feliz, sigue siendo hoy en día una de las novelas inglesas más influyentes del siglo XX. Para poder estudiar cómo se construye la ambivalente distopía detrás de este nuevo mundo feliz, en este ensayo se propone un enfoque poético-cognitivo consistente en la aplicación al análisis literario de conceptos desarrollados en el campo de la lingüística cognitiva. La adopción de este método analítico tiene por objetivo explorar el proceso de lectura de ciencia-ficción distópica en sí mismo, así como obtener fundamentos sólidos para interpretaciones intuitivas acerca de la relación entre individuo y comunidad.
The Wife's Lament. A Cognitive Journey into the Discovery of its Core Meaning

The study of Old English texts gives essential information in multiple fields such as linguistics, history and psychology. However, understanding complex textual entities as is the case of “The Wife’s Lament” poem is certainly problematic as the multiple interpretations evidence. This paper aims to return the poem to its core meaning by analysing its relationship with the historical context and by applying a cognitive linguistics approach. It proposes a theory based on the prototypicality concept and the connection between language and historical context, ‘The Conceptual Foundations Theory’, in the hope that this could be useful to study other texts. Moreover, the analysis of Idealized Conceptual Models: metaphors, metonymies and image schemas, fundamental in cognitivism, will also attempt to shed light on the interpretation of this poem. This could also be of some assistance in future research.
The Yorkshire accent and the lack of the foot-strut split

The foot-strut split is a phonological phenomenon where the vowel /u/ divided into different phonemes / / (as in foot) and / / (as in strut). However, the split did not occur in the North of England, and these vowels have remained a single phoneme for Northern English speakers. Yorkshire is a county in the North of England where this split is not present and most of its speakers do not differentiate between both phonemes / / and / /. In this dissertation, a small corpus of Yorkshire accent speakers has been created by asking them to utter 7 minimal pairs. Consequently, the recordings have been analysed using the program Praat. This work illustrates the lack of the foot-strut split in the Yorkshire accent in most of the speakers recorded, as only 1 out of 8 speakers did have the split present in their accent.
Translation from English into Spanish of a specialised glossary created through a corpus of texts related to Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant

Este trabajo de fin de grado nace con el objetivo de crear una herramienta útil para la consulta de términos y frases relacionados con la técnica médica del trasplante de células madre y médula ósea. A partir de la teoría comunicativa de la terminología de Maria Teresa Cabré, y a través de un corpus formado por diferentes textos en inglés relacionados con el tema, analizamos con el programa Wordsmith Tools las palabras y frases más usadas en este ámbito. Con la ayuda del programa hemos generado un glosario especializado en inglés que luego hemos traducido al español con la ayuda de diccionarios especializados y textos paralelos. Además, también demostramos la importancia de las unidades fraseológicas, en este caso concreto, mediante el análisis cuantitativo de los datos obtenidos.

For this final paper I have focused my research on the implementation of trilingual education in the Basque Country and more accurately, I have developed a “case study” based at San José Ikastetxea (Durango-Bizkaia). At the same time and in order to present a more personal piece of work, I have interviewed European citizens who are either bilingual or trilingual and have had access to more than one education system. They have provided me with their points of view regarding the learning of second/third languages, which have enriched my own personal conclusions.
El verso compuesto en prosas profanas de Rubén Darío

En este breve trabajo intentamos dar cuenta de las características métricas y estilísticas esenciales del verso compuesto de Rubén Darío. Se trata de un estudio parcial, ya que nuestra labor abarca solo las dos primeras secciones de Prosas profanas y otros poemas. Partimos del análisis de todos los elementos rítmicos que conforman el verso: la sílaba, el acento, la pausa y la rima. Después, clasificamos y describimos los versos según las pautas establecidas por los principales tratados de métrica española. Seguidamente, establecemos la frecuencia de aparición de cada uno de los tipos rítmicos y el modo en que Rubén Darío los combina. Finalmente, hacemos un pequeño comentario valorativo y proponemos algunos ejemplos de ejecución de versos cuando consideramos que el ejemplo de verso puede dar lugar a diferentes modelos de ejecución
Women challenging boundaries of gender, race and sexuality in fall on your knees, by Ann-Marie Macdonald

This paper deals with the study of the novel Fall on Your Knees, by Ann-Marie MacDonald. My aim is to analyse MacDonald’s portrayal of female transgression of boundaries regarding gender, race and sexuality at the end of the 20th century. As I go forward, I will provide a better understanding of its relevance concerning the portrayal of subversive female characters in counter position to a traditional and oppressive patriarchal society. By defying the hegemonic masculinity, these brave women become empowered creating their true identities and influencing new generations. Through examination and recognition of new ways of being a woman portrayed in literary manifestations such as Fall on Your Knees, I want to suggest, we can open up debate and promote social change.
