This essay explores the renegotiation of family structures in Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia, focusing on how characters manage the tension between personal desire and collective duty. Through Karim and Jamila’s journeys, this work reveals how dysfunctional fathers as well as gender and generational conflicts are the cause of the identity crises and ensuing personal transformation of Kureishi’s characters. These transcultural identities challenge traditional family roles and expectations, and explore alternative kinship networks, defined by shared experiences rather than blood ties. This redefinition of the family supports Kureishi’s critique of rigid social structures and the celebration of individual agency in the construction of self and a sense of belonging.
