Modernism –as a historiographical category applied in different degrees of precision to a number of literary, artistic, philosophical and theological trends– also characterizes a historical context critical for the understanding of the apocryphal saints’ phenomenon, known in El Salvador as Hermanos Espirituales. This kind of vernacular religion is indistinctly recognized as a byproduct of folk Catholicism, esoteric practices and even pre-Hispanic religiosity. However, based on new archival evidence this article shows a close relationship between positivistic Spiritism of the early twentieth century and the Hermanos Espirituales phenomenon. This relationship exposes complex strategies of simulation and false ascription as one of the dominant features of this form of popular devotion. From here two important conclusions can be made: firstly, the ability of Salvadoran vernacular religion to absorb order from a force which also contains its antithesis and, secondly, the (somehow paradoxical) contribution of the secularization processes of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century to the renewal of the symbolic capital and the increasing of spiritual creativity.
