This thesis investigates the mystical experience through Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy. Three distinct categories of mysticism are developed: nihilistic mysticism, dionysian-origin mystical experience, and dionysian-symbolic mysticism. The first, drawing on Schopenhauer and the philosophy of Silenus, refers to contemplation and inaction leading one toward ascetic pessimism and the negation of life. The second focuses on the primitive dionysian inebriation, in which the mystic is bodily possessed by Dionysus and, amidst frenetic chants and exuberant choreomania, embodies the suffering of divine dismemberment. The third emerges within Greek tragedy as a means to recall and commemorate the original Dionysian mysticism without risking the Hellenic nausea. These three mystical modalities are argumentatively woven around the concepts of hýbris and the Greek wisdom of limits.
