The following end-of-degree project explores the significance of early 20th Century English Literature for contemporary readers, by examining how Edward Morgan Forster’s writings, particularly his novels A Passage to India and Howards End, engage with the cultural, political, and moral intricacies of British colonialism and its enduring legacy.
Forster reflects the societal dynamics of his time, particularly through the development of his characters, and the exploration of themes such as colonialism, imperialism, and cultural misunderstandings. These themes continue to resonate in contemporary society and in literature.
In this Bachelor’s Final Project, we aim to demonstrate that, despite Forster’s death in 1970, the theme of colonialism continues to serve as a driving force in his literary production and informs current societal and academic discourse. Hence, we will examine the most relevant theoretical frameworks related to colonialism, point out its relevance in modern contexts and reference prominent contemporary essays and articles that engage with these critical issues.
