This dissertation centers its attention on a methodological teaching proposal to be implemented in the secondary-school classroom. Its main objective consists in making use of automatic speech recognition technology integrated into a didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) activity to improve second language learners’ oral production in English, enhance their ability to interact effectively in this foreign language and raise their awareness of common production mistakes. Considering that motivation also plays a crucial role in the learners’ acquisition of language skills, DAT is proposed as a motivating tool to connect with teenagers’ reality and compensate for the lack of time teachers frequently find to focus on pronunciation in instructional settings. The proposal would adopt a mixedmethods approach that would see forty-eight high school students divided into a control group and an experimental group giving conventional presentations and working additionally on a dubbing activity at home in case of the latter group or carrying out other traditional tasks in the case of the control group. Qualitative data regarding the experimental group’s experience would be gathered by means of questionnaires, while quantitative data would be coded and analyzed using pre- and post-intervention tests to observe if an improvement takes places after the treatment. The results would probably have major implications for pedagogy as they would offer insights into the effectiveness of employing these tools in the teaching of English as a second language.
