Widely analysed from numerous perspectives, John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath constitutes one of the pillars of 20th-century North American literature. A work deeply tied to the historical context in which it was written, it has maintained its relevance due to the universal themes it addresses. However, a deeper layer of analysis might show how Steinbeck’s novel, as an artistic creation, is a cultural product that conveys and participates in the construction of the prevalent ideology of its time. More specifically, it can be embedded within a general change in mainstream economic management—a shift towards greater state intervention and the regulation of markets. An economic analysis of the novel, focusing on market failures, can give rise to a debate about the role of the state, showing how literature can be an active agent in the shaping of history, politics, and economics.
