This dissertation investigates the qualifying adjectives used in the novel The Left Hand of Darkness (Le Guin, 1969) to describe Therem Harth rem ir Estraven, one of its main characters. The central purpose of the paper is to determine whether these adjectives are primarily positive or negative in nature. To this end, we draw on previous related research, which until now had only addressed aspects such as the use of personal pronouns or the influence of the lexicon used on how this character is perceived. Our hypothesis is that, at least in the first chapters of the novel, adjectives traditionally associated with femininity are used pejoratively, while those linked to masculinity have a positive connotation. Using methodologies such as distant reading (Moretti, 2000) and Appraisal theory, we have created a corpus that arguably contributes to feminist research in the field of corpus linguistics.
