This article reflects on the changes that generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is bringing about in higher education. Drawing from several experiences of teaching innovation at the Complutense University of Madrid and UNED, it analyses the challenges posed by its use in teaching and assessment, as well as the opportunities it offers to enhance certain educational processes. The text combines a review of recent studies with observations arising from classroom practice. It discusses the ethical, epistemological, and structural implications of the advent of GAI. In conclusion, it highlights that the main challenge does not lie so much in academic fraud, but rather in the widespread use of its potential and the depersonalisation of learning. It concludes that universities should foster a critical and balanced integration of GAI, strengthening both digital and pre-digital competences through a structural reform of the educational model that reduces student-to-teacher ratios and increases investment.
