Throughout the Western world, and specially in Spain, the three first decades of the 20th century marked a crucial moment for the history of women, mainly provoked by the profound legal and social transformations which affected both the public and the private spheres of women's life. Nonetheless, in the Hispanic context, it was not until the end of the century that literary critics started to recover female prewar writers, intellectuals and artists. Among them, this essay focuses on Elena Arcediano, a playwright of considerable interest whose literary work falls within the aforementioned period, although, to date, she has scarcely received attention from critics. It also analyzes the two plays that she wrote and premiered: Mujeres solas and Sol en la arena. Taking an interdisciplinary approach that combines the contributions of feminist literary criticism and gender studies, and is based on a sociological approach to literature, an in-depth look is taken at both plays from the point of view of the models of female identity that they propose, insofar as they reflect on the evolution of traditional gender roles, motherhood and the conflict between self-sacrifice and desire. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the restoration of Elena Arcediano and her works into the literary canon.
