This study investigates the factors contributing to exceptional satisfaction in distance education courses at the National University of Distance Education (UNED) in Spain, using the Data-Powered Positive Deviance (DPPD) approach. The research focuses on the degrees of Pedagogy, Social Education, and Early Childhood Education, with the aim of identifying successful pedagogical practices that can be replicated in other courses. A mixed methodological design was adopted, combining quantitative analysis from student satisfaction surveys and qualitative analysis through case studies and literature review. This work highlights the usefulness of the DPPD approach in distance education to identify and apply effective pedagogical practices. The research presents an innovative methodological framework applicable to asynchronous education, being one of the first studies to adopt the Positive Deviance methodology. The study follows the DPPD methodology outlined by UNDP and other institutions. Throughout the study, a verification tool for observable success factors in course case studies is developed, based on the synthesis of various review articles in the fields of e-learning and edutainment. To enrich the verification of success factors, the activation of epistemic emotions in e-learning is included. Finally, based on the case study results, two adaptable templates are developed for other courses, based on the positively deviated artifact: storytelling applied to instructional design.
