Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems have become highly relevant as a strategy for improving the accuracy and verifiability of language models, thanks to the combination of generation with information retrieval mechanisms. However, most research has focused on languages with abundant linguistic resources and tends to evaluate the entire architecture, paying less attention to the detailed analysis of each of its phases. This work specifically addresses the information retrieval stage in RAG architectures, with a study focused on Galician and the domain of the written press. The analysis compares classical lexical methods with state-of-the-art dense multilingual retrievers, as well as incorporating neural reranking modules. To enable experimentation, a specific evaluation set for Galician was created and a modular open-source tool was developed to automate indexing, retrieval and evaluation. The results show that dense multilingual retrievers consistently outperform traditional lexical approaches, and that the integration of neural rerankers contributes to significantly improving ranking quality. These findings are particularly relevant in contexts where there are no models trained specifically for a language and it is necessary to resort to multilingual options. Together with the resources developed, they provide a framework that can be applied to other minority languages and help to extend the scope of RAG research beyond English-dominated contexts.
