Different approaches to Spanish e-government: from use to impact
(Elsevier, 2025-02-12) Gijón Tascón, María Covadonga; Fernández Bonilla, Fernando; Ruiz Rua, Aurora
This paper examines the factors that determine the use of e-government services in Spain. It identifies key determinants, including e-services usage synergies, e-trust, e-skills and socio-demographic determinants of e-government use as an outcome of a logit model with national data from 2023. The main results highlight the key role of ICT skills, confidence in technology and the quality of Internet connectivity, revealing significant disparities between socio-economic groups. Meanwhile, it explores the second and third levels of the digital divide, with a special focus on the information and ICT domain and its effective application, analysing the penetration and main uses of e-government in Spain. Policy recommendations call for the enhancement of digital literacy, the fostering of trust in e-government and the improvement of Internet access for vulnerable populations to promote inclusive digital governance.

    Trust on Personalised Electronic Commerce
(Association for Computing Machinery, ACM, 2023-05-26) Gijón Tascón, María Covadonga; Fernández Bonilla, Fernando; Cuadrado Gallego, Juan José; Usero, Luis; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8178-5556; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8658-9992
This study aims to find out the level of concern of Internet users in Spain for personalised advertising. The privacy and value of users' data is closely related to the risk and trust they feel in the network. Users are concerned about personalised advertising because they feel that their privacy is at risk. A Generalised Ordered Logit model is used, which will estimate users' levels of concern, using variables such as their Internet security tools and other socio-demographic variables. Some of the conclusions obtained are the inverse relationship between trust in the Internet and the development of excessive concern about receiving personalised advertising and the positive impact of having suffered from fraud and having high levels of concern about personalised.

Banking digitalization in Spain: How branch closures and digital barriers reshape financial inclusion
(Elsevier, 2025-04-08) Martínez de Ibarreta, Carlos; Ruiz Rua, Aurora; Gijón Tascón, María Covadonga; Fernández Bonilla, Fernando
This paper examines the impact of banking digitalization in Spain, focusing on the consequences of branch closures and digital barriers for financial inclusion. Using panel data from the Survey on Equipment and Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Households (2017–2021), a logit model with random effects is estimated to analyse the determinants of e-banking adoption. The findings reveal that a lower density of bank branches per 1000 inhabitants significantly increases the propensity to use e-banking. However, digital financial inclusion remains uneven, with age, digital skills, gender, and geographic location playing critical roles in adoption patterns. While the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated e-banking uptake, structural inequalities persist, particularly among older adults and rural populations. Additionally, despite rising e-banking adoption, engagement with advanced digital financial services (e.g., stock trading, insurance, loans) remains limited, suggesting that digital financial literacy gaps continue to hinder full participation in digital banking. These findings highlight the need for targeted financial education programs, improved digital infrastructure, and hybrid banking models that ensure accessibility for vulnerable populations.

Exploring the differences in broadband access speeds across Glasgow
(Elsevier, 2015-11-19) Gijón Tascón, María Covadonga; Whalley, Jason; Anderson, Gillian
It is widely argued that broadband is beneficial. Higher rates of broadband penetration and adoption are associated with enhanced economic growth, while for individuals accessing the Internet through a broadband connection opens up a range of opportunities to them. However, to enjoy these opportunities users need access to both an Internet connection as well as the possession of a range of skills. As not everyone has access to one or both of these, a range of digital divides have emerged within and between countries. This paper explores one aspect of the digital divides that have emerged, namely, speed. Broadband speeds vary considerably, reflecting many factors such as the technology(s) used, the number of users, the distance of the user from the telephone exchange and so forth. Rather than explore the digital divides that exist between countries, we focus on a single city: Glasgow. Using data from a variety of sources we explore broadband speeds across the city. While broadband speeds have improved across much of Glasgow, this is not true every part of the city. Average speeds vary considerably across the city, with the consequence that the ability to access opportunities online also varies. There is some evidence to suggest that those parts of the city with lower levels of deprivation enjoy higher broadband speeds than areas within Glasgow of higher deprivation levels. Our analysis also found that considerable variations exist between service providers.

E-commerce in Spain: Determining factors and the importance of the e-trust
(Elsevier, 2022-01-15) Gijón Tascón, María Covadonga; Vega Justribó, Bárbara de la; Fernández Bonilla, Fernando
This paper identifies and estimates the determinants for participating in e-commerce and developing e-trust, as well as the importance of e-trust for e-commerce in Spain. For its analysis, a national survey from 2014 to 2019 is used and the logit model is implemented. It is concluded that the e-trust is a determining factor in e-commerce, and the improvement of equality education helps the growth of online commerce and e-trust. In turn, e-trust encourages the use of all digital resources.
