    Control education for societal-scale challenges: A community roadmap

    This article focuses on extending, disseminating and interpreting the findings of an IEEE Control Systems Society working group looking at the role of control theory and engineering in solving some of the many current and future societal challenges. The findings are interpreted in a manner designed to give focus and direction to both future education and research work in the general control theory and engineering arena, interpreted in the broadest sense. The paper is intended to promote discussion in the community and also provide a useful starting point for colleagues wishing to re-imagine the design and delivery of control-related topics in our education systems, especially at the tertiary level and beyond.

    Improving the accuracy of COPLIMO to estimate the payoff of a software product line

    Software product line engineering pursues the efficient development of families of similar products. COPLIMO is an economic model that relies on COCOMO II to estimate the benefits of adopting a product line approach compared to developing the products one by one. Although COPLIMO is an ideal economic model to support decision making on the incremental development of a product line, it makes some simplifying assumptions that may produce high distortions in the estimates (e.g., COPLIMO takes for granted that all the products have the same size). This paper proposes a COPLIMO reformulation that avoids such assumptions and, consequently, improves the accuracy of the estimates. To support our proposal, we present an algorithm that infers the additional information that our COPLIMO reformulation requires from feature diagrams, which is a widespread notation to model the domain of a product line.

    Standardizing course assessment in competency-based higher education: an experience report

    We examine the implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valpara´ıso (PUCV) in Chile, focusing on the challenges associated with assessment methods in measuring students’ competencies accurately. To address these issues, we first introduce the Competency Assessment and Monitoring (C-A&M) model, which aims to standardize and improve course evaluation. Then, two complementary studies are reported: a within-groups design involving 20 Engineering courses and a between-groups design assessing the perceptions of 109 instructors across various faculties, including Law, Philosophy, and Education. Findings indicate that CBE is not yet fully realized at PUCV, with considerable room for improvement in evaluation strategies, alignment of learning objectives with competencies, and synchronization of training activities. However, the implementation of the C-A&M model led to significant enhancements in these areas, providing evidence of its effectiveness in advancing CBE practices.

    Design of a low-cost air levitation system for teaching control engineering

    Air levitation is the process by which an object is lifted without mechanical support in a stable position, by providing an upward force that counteracts the gravitational force exerted on the object. This work presents a low-cost lab implementation of an air levitation system, based on open solutions. The rapid dynamics makes it especially suitable for a control remote lab. Due to the system’s nature, the design can be optimized and, with some precision trade-off, kept affordable both in cost and construction effort. It was designed to be easily adopted to be used as both a remote lab and as a hands-on lab.

    Evidence-Based Control Engineering Education: Evaluating the LCSD Simulation Tool

    The advance in control engineering education needs well-designed studies that validate what methods and tools work best. This paper addresses the lack of empirical evidence supporting innovations in control engineering education by proposing a methodology that works at different abstraction levels. Hence, innovations' impact on students' performance can be statistically analyzed either globally or locally by examining competencies or fine-grained indicators, respectively. The article reports the application of the methodology for evaluating an interactive simulation tool, named LCSD, on 101 students at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso in Chile. According to the experimental results, LCSD is an effective free alternative to enhance the student's skills on control system analysis for our automatic control course. Also, some improvements have been identified for future LCSD versions.

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical devices connected to the internet. Online connections enable users to remotely monitor the devices and their surroundings or to actively control them through sensors and actuators. As the technology has progressed, the importance of the IoT has grown tremendously. According to the McKinsey Global Institute, the IoT’s annual economic impact could reach $11 trillion by 2025.     A Study of Strategies for Developing Online Laboratories

    Researchers and teachers around the world have created newsoftware and hardware to develop, reuse, and deploy online laboratories (labs). However, due to the nature of labs, most of the available solutions depend greatly on where and how online labs can be used in the first place. Thus, there have been multiple design solutions and great technology combinations. In this study, we analyzed and studied the main obstacles in the online lab development and the alternatives of the technologies, means, methodologies, and approaches on creating online labs. The resulting analysis showed the advantages, disadvantages, and problems of each key component and attempted to explore the working combinations that ensure the usability, modularity, universality, accessibility, and reliability of online labs. In addition, we explored a general solution to take advantage of the benefits of the technologies involved in online labs and to fix or reduce the impacts of the arising problems when developing and deploying online labs.

    WarehouseGame Training: A Gamified Logistics Training Platform Integrating ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Grok for Adaptive Learning

    Modern warehouses play a fundamental role in today’s logistics, serving as strategic hubs for the reception, storage, and distribution of goods. However, training warehouse operators presents a significant challenge due to the complexity of logistics processes and the need for efficient and engaging learning methods. Training in logistics operations requires practical experience and the ability to adapt to real-world scenarios, which can result in high training costs. In this context, gamification and artificial intelligence emerge as innovative solutions to enhance training by increasing operator motivation, reducing learning time, and optimizing costs through personalized approaches. But is it possible to effectively apply these techniques to logistics training? This study introduces WarehouseGame Training, a gamified training tool developed in collaboration with Mecalux Software Solutions and implemented in Unity 3D. The solution integrates large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Grok to enhance adaptive learning. These models dynamically adjust challenge difficulty, provide contextual assistance, and evaluate user performance in logistics training scenarios. Through this gamified training tool, the performance of these AI models is analyzed and compared, assessing their ability to improve the learning experience and determine which one best adapts to this type of training.

    Adding automatic evaluation to interactive virtual labs

    Automatic evaluation is a challenging field that has been addressed by the academic community in order to reduce the assessment workload. In this work we present a new element for the authoring tool Easy Java Simulations (EJS). This element, which is named automatic evaluation element (AEE), provides automatic evaluation to virtual and remote laboratories built with EJS by using the server application Goodle grading management system (GMS). The integration of both tools entitles a professor to create interactive virtual and remote laboratories and automatically evaluate the work of their students. As a test bed two case studies are presented; a non-linear controller design virtual laboratory used in an advanced control master course and a servomechanism virtual laboratory used in an undergraduate basic control course.

    Virtual and remote labs in education: A bibliometric analysis

    Laboratory experimentation plays an essential role in engineering and scientific education. Virtual and remote labs reduce the costs associated with conventional hands-on labs due to their required equipment, space, and maintenance staff. Furthermore, they provide additional benefits such as supporting distance learning, improving lab accessibility to handicapped people, and increasing safety for dangerous experimentation. This paper analyzes the literature on virtual and remote labs from its beginnings to 2015, identifying the most influential publications, the most researched topics, and how the interest in those topics has evolved along the way. To do so, bibliographical data gathered from ISI Web of Science, Scopus and GRC2014 have been examined using two prominent bibliometric approaches: science mapping and performance analysis.
