    Travelling philosophers: Dewey and Russell in China

    The aim of this paper is a reconsideration of John Dewey’s stay in China, an experience abroad that influenced enormously in his intellectual and human development. Our approach will be comparative, assessing his model of cultural dialogue through a contrast between his attitudes and actions in China and Bertrand Russell’s ones. We think that, thanks to this thorough comparative research, we make much clearer their respective conceptions of the role that intellectuals could play in international political sceneries. One hundred year after they arrived to and thought about China, we think that this often-unknown chapter of the history of intellectuals can be particularly relevant for ensuing surveys of cultural studies and sociology of knowledge.

    Pron vs Prompt: Can Large Language Models already Challenge a World-Class Fiction Author at Creative Text Writing?

    Are LLMs ready to compete in creative writing skills with a top (rather than average) novelist? To provide an initial answer for this question, we have carried out a contest between Patricio Pron (an awarded novelist, considered one of the best of his generation) and GPT-4 (one of the top performing LLMs), in the spirit of AIhuman duels such as DeepBlue vs Kasparov and AlphaGo vs Lee Sidol. We asked Pron and GPT-4 to provide thirty titles each, and then to write short stories for both their titles and their opponent’s. Then, we prepared an evaluation rubric inspired by Boden’s definition of creativity, and we collected several detailed expert assessments of the texts, provided by literature critics and scholars. The results of our experimentation indicate that LLMs are still far from challenging a top human creative writer. We also observed that GPT-4 writes more creatively using Pron’s titles than its own titles (which is an indication of the potential for human-machine co-creation). Additionally, we found that GPT-4 has a more creative writing style in English than in Spanish.

    El presente ensayo reconsidera las críticas de John Dewey a Walter Lippmann tomando como eje los argumentos esgrimidos en las sucesivas reseñas que Dewey fue haciendo de las obras de Lippmann. Se sostiene que las críticas que Dewey lanzó en estas reseñas, así como luego en The Public and its Problems (1927) ya apuntaban en una dirección que quedó más explícita en los años treinta, cuando Dewey respondió con lenguaje socialista a un Lippmann que apelaba a algo más que a la autoridad de expertos para contrarrestar las derivas de la democracia. En el debate que mantuvieron, no solo se pusieron en juego dos visiones de la relación entre democracia y voluntad popular, sino dos concepciones discrepantes sobre las bases económicas de una sociedad abierta y las condiciones necesarias para el ejercicio de la libertad.

    The gospel of heroism

    This chapter examines in detail the war between good and evil and how some martial virtues could be preserved in times of peace. The spirit of great men “diffuses , it does not remain the sole possession of the great man, holding the populace in dependence”. James was closer to Emerson’s view, but his vocabulary is different – less lyrical, more scientific. His assessment of great men bestows a lot more importance on the sociological perspective. It is important to point out that James never denied the relevance of both, circumstances and the social group, with regard to these kinds of changes. In the honorific speech dedicated to the fallen soldiers at Fort Wagner, James makes a key distinction to understand his gospel of heroism: he identifies two elements that play a role in turning soldiers into heroes. “Poverty indeed is the strenuous life – without brass bands or uniforms or hysteric popular applause or lies or circumlocutions.
