Retos para la inclusión de los y las jóvenes: la intervención educativa
(INJUVE, 2012-06-01) Segado Sánchez-Cabezudo, Sagrario; Acebes Valentín, Rafael

    Child Protection Systems in Spain
(Oxford University Press, 2023-02-23) Segado Sánchez-Cabezudo, Sagrario
This chapter expounds on the child protection systems in Spain. It cites the range of international, national, and regional legislations impacting the Spanish child protection system. The social protection system for minors aims to protect the rights of children and adolescents, guarantee their well-being, families, safe environment, and belonging. Regardless of the parties involved, the measures will be catered to the minor’s best interests. The chapter notes how there is still a long way to go in addressing the violence against minors, unaccompanied foreign minors and child poverty, despite Spain being family-oriented. It notes the models of support intervention in child protection such as theories of attachment, child needs, ecological-systematic model, empowerment and protection factors.

Social perceptions and representations of unaccompanied foreign minors on social media
(Wiley, 2025-02-27) Lima Fernández, Ana Isabel; Fresno García, Miguel del; Pérez Viejo, Jesús Manuel; Segado Sánchez-Cabezudo, Sagrario
The migration of unaccompanied foreign minors (UAMs) to Europe has become a prominent issue, particularly in Spain, due to its geographic proximity to North Africa. This study explores the social perceptions and representations of UAMs on social media, analyzing the dominant narratives and their impact on public opinion. Employing mixed-methods analysis, combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches, we examine discourse structures and the amplification of polarized narratives around UAMs. Findings reveal a prevailing narrative of criminalization and security concerns, with frequent portrayals of UAMs as threats, which are amplified through social media's echo chamber effect and by influential network leaders. Conversely, a minority narrative highlighting their vulnerability and human rights needs is less visible, suppressed by the spiral of silence phenomenon. These polarized narratives significantly influence public perceptions, reinforcing stereotypes and shaping potential policies. The study emphasizes the importance of balanced, rights-based communication strategies to counteract negative representations and foster an inclusive public discourse surrounding UAMs.

Corporal punishment and reporting to child protection authorities: An empirical study of population attitudes in five European countries
(Elsevier, 2020-12-09) Burns, Kenneth; Stein Helland, Hege; Križ, Katrin; Segado Sánchez-Cabezudo, Sagrario; Skivenes, Marit; Strömpl, Judith
This study, which draws upon representative survey data of the populations of Austria (n = 1000), Estonia (n = 1069), Ireland (n = 1000), Norway (n = 1002) and Spain (n = 1000), compares population attitudes towards corporal punishment (CP) and whether citizens would report corporal punishment to the child protection authorities. We found significant cross-country differences in attitudes towards CP, but only small differences between countries in attitudes towards reporting it. The most interesting and puzzling finding was the mismatch between attitudes towards CP and attitudes towards reporting it: almost one third of individuals who reject CP would not report it, and a quarter of those accepting CP would report it. We discuss whether the observed mismatches are due to perceptions that the CP we described does not meet a threshold to require state intervention, and whether knowledge about bans of CP and/or moral obligations to report CP has impact. Furthermore, we discuss the role of populations’ confidence in the state and populations’ trust in the ability and competency of the child protection authorities to improve a child’s life.

Evolution of the European Regulatory and Competence Framework for Unaccompanied Migrant Minors Legislation
(Peter Lang, 2021-01-01) Segado Sánchez-Cabezudo, Sagrario
This chapter makes a deep and important diachronic review of the European regulatory and competence framework for Unaccompanied migrant minors’ legislation. It does it from the first normative until today. We have identified the binding legislative sources affecting unaccompanied migrant minors and have also identified and commented on non-binding European legislation, because it is precisely in this legislation that these minors are explicitly referred to. This chapter shows that the legislation is really alive on this matter, shifting along the years, changing the concept and the way of intervention that EU states should perform in regard to the unaccompanied migrant minors that arrive to the EU.

Socioeconomic barriers and educational pathways of unaccompanied foreign minors in Europe's southern border
(Wiley, 2025-06-26) Si Ali, Mimón Mohamed; Toutouh El Alamin, Jamal; Segado Sánchez-Cabezudo, Sagrario; Gilbert, Neil
This article investigates social vulnerability, legal challenges, and migratory experiences of unaccompanied foreign minors entering Europe via Melilla, a Spanish city in northern Africa. A mixed-methods approach integrates statistical analysis and qualitative research, including natural language processing on 1274 records and 1200 in-depth interviews. The theoretical framework combines social vulnerability theory, the child-rights perspective, and migration decision-making models to clarify how structural (institutional and cultural) and individual (motivations and social networks) factors influence school attendance frequency and continuity, as well as integration in a border environment. Quantitative findings emphasize the key roles of socioeconomic status and educational modality (public vs. Quranic), revealing no significance for nationality. Qualitative evidence underscores linguistic barriers and discrimination, highlighting the necessity of enhanced psychosocial and cultural support. Given these results, the study calls for urgent reforms to child protection policies and border-control strategies, aligning measures with the principle of the child's best interests.

Relative Immunity: COVID-19 Pandemic Effects on the Emotional State, Economy, Leisure, and Socialization of Young People in Spain
(MDPI, 2023-04-12) Segado Sánchez-Cabezudo, Sagrario; Sotomayor, Eva; Páez Gallego, Javier
This study aims to analyze the habits and attitudes of young people in Spain during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically regarding leisure and free time, framed within a context of the objective structural indicators of the economy, employment, and health. To this end, we reviewed official data banks and surveys conducted in Spain on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the general population. We performed a descriptive and longitudinal analysis with the aim of amalgamating the data on the general behavior of Spanish youth in terms of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their mental health and their positioning on the issues most important to them, especially in regard to their social relationships and leisure activities. Based on the results, we found evidence that young people were negatively affected by the impact of the pandemic, and, similarly to other age groups, reported high levels of concern about the demise of many of the aspects of their prepandemic lifestyles. Although their concerns mainly focused on leisure activities and social relationships, young people are the population group that suffered the highest anxiety levels during the pandemic. In relation to this, we highlight how the emergency measures adopted by society to fight against the spread of the virus were precisely aimed at restricting social relationships and leisure activities.
