To date, it has yielded a rich collection of well-preserved Cretaceous macrofossils, including plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. The recovered fossil assemblage is mainly composed of plants, molluscs (bivalves and gastropods), actinopterygians and teleosteans fishes, amphibians, panpleurodiran (bothremydids) and pancryptodiran turtles, squamate lizards, eusuchian crocodyliforms, rhabdodontid ornithopods, theropods (mainly dromaeosaurids), and titanosaur sauropods. This assemblage was deposited in a near-coast continental muddy floodplain crossed by distributary sandy channels, exposed intermittently to brackish or marine and freshwater flooding as well as to partial or total desiccation events. The Konzentrat-Lagerstatt of Lo Hueco constitutes a singular accumulation of fossils representing individuals of some particular lineages of continental tetrapods, especially titanosaurs, eusuchians and bothremydid turtles. In the case of the titanosaurs, the site has yielded multiple partial skeletons in anatomical connection or with a low dispersion of their skeletal elements. A combination of new taxa, new records of taxa previously known in the Iberian Peninsula, and relatively common taxa in the European record compose the Lo Hueco biota. The particular conditions of the fossil site of Lo Hueco and the preliminary results indicate that the analysis of the geological context, the floral and faunal content, and the taphonomical features of the site provide elements that will be especially useful for reassess the evolutionary history of some lineages of European Late Cretaceous reptiles.Publicación Upper Jurassic sauropod record in the Lusitanian Basin (Portugal): Geographical and lithostratigraphical distribution(Coquina Press, 2017-05-01) Mocho, Pedro; Royo-Torres, Rafael; Escaso Santos, Fernando; Malafaia, Elisabete; Miguel Chaves, Carlos de; Narváez Padilla, Iván; Pérez García, Adán; Pimentel, Nuno; Silva, Bruno C.; Ortega Coloma, Francisco JavierSauropod remains are relatively abundant in the Upper Jurassic sediments of the Lusitanian Basin. These dinosaurs are recorded in several sub-basins formed during the third rifting episode related to the evolution of the Lusitanian Basin. The Kimmeridgian-Tithonian sedimentary sequence is dominated by siliciclastic deposits, indicating a continental environment. Sauropods are present all along this mainly terrestrial sequence, being recorded in the Alcobaça, Praia da Amoreira-Porto Novo, Sobral, Freixial, and the Bombarral Formations, ranging from the early Kimmeridgian to the late Tithonian. Sauropoda is the most abundant dinosaur group in the Upper Jurassic fossil record of the Lusitanian Basin and is especially well-represented in the Bombarral and Turcifal Sub-basins. Several new specimens, so far unpublished, are reported here. The sauropod fauna identified mainly includes non-neosauropod eusauropods (including turiasaurs), diplodocoids (some specimens with diplodocine affinities), basal macronarians (non-camarasaurids and camarasaurids), and titanosauriforms (some specimens with brachiosaurid affinities). Macronarians, turiasaurs and diplodocoids are generally present along the entire Kimmeridgian-Tithonian continental to transitional deposits of the Lusitanian Basin, but the known fossil record for some more exclusive groups such as camarasaurids, brachiosaurids, and diplodocines, present a more restricted stratigraphic distribution.Publicación A new dryosaurid ornithopod (Dinosauria, Ornithischia) from the Late Jurassic of Portugal(Taylor & Francis, 2014-09-09) Escaso Santos, Fernando; Ortega Coloma, Francisco Javier; Dantas, Pedro; Malafaia, Elisabete; Silva, Bruno; Gasulla, José M.; Mocho, Pedro; Narváez Padilla, Iván; Sanz, Jose L.A new dryosaurid ornithopod, Eousdryosaurus nanohallucis, gen. et sp. nov., is described here based on a single specimen from the Late Jurassic Alcobaça Formation of Portugal. Eousdryosaurus nanohallucis is distinguished from all other dryosaurids by eight autapomorphic features and an unique combination of characters, some of which are also shared by other dryosaurids. Eousdryosaurus is linked with Dryosauridae, because the fourth trochanter is proximally placed and widely separated from the scar for the insertion of the M. caudifemoralis longus, which is restricted to the medial surface of the femoral shaft. Phylogenetic analysis nests Eousdryosaurus in an unresolved polytomy at the base of Dryosauridae together with Callovosaurus, Dryosaurus, and Kangnasaurus. The complete pes of Eousdryosaurus, which has a phalangeal formula of 1-3-4-5-0, supports the putative autapomorphic reduction of the dryosaurid pes that also occurs in parallel in more derived ornithopodsPublicación A new Crocodyloidea from the middle Eocene of Zamora (Duero Basin, Spain)(Wiley, 2024-03-05) Narváez Padilla, Iván; Celis, Ane de; Escaso Santos, Fernando; Martín de Jesús, Santiago; Pérez García, Adán; Ortega Coloma, Francisco JavierThe eusuchian crocodyliforms recorded in the Eocene levels of the Spanish Duero Basin belong to three lineages: Planocraniidae, with the species Duerosuchus piscator; Alligatoroidea, represented by several specimens of the genus Diplocynodon; and Crocodyloidea, which includes several specimens traditionally attributed to Asiatosuchus. The genus Asiatosuchus, established in 1940 based on a middle Eocene species from Mongolia, has subsequently served as a wastebasket taxon for Paleogene remains belonging to several species, not only from Asia but also belonging to the European and North American records. Many of these species are known by highly fragmentary remains, sharing the presence of characters such as a flat and triangular skull, and long symphyses in the lower jaw, recognized as characteristic for the crocodyloids. In addition to isolated cranial remains, among the material traditionally attributed to Asiatosuchus at the Duero Basin stands out a nearly complete skull and a left mandible, from the middle Eocene area of Casaseca de Campeán (Zamora Province). The present study analyses in detail these specimens, previously reported during the 1980s, but analyzed in a very preliminary way. They are included for the first time in a phylogenetic analysis to establish the systematic position of this Spanish form. España; US National Science FoundationThelate Campanian-early Maastrichtian site of Lo Hueco (Cuenca, Spain) has provided a set of well-preserved crocodyliform skull and lower jaw remains, which are described here and assigned to a newbasaleusuchiantaxon, Lohuecosuchus megadontos gen. et sp. nov. The reevaluation of a complete skull from the synchronous site of Fox-Amphoux (Department of Var, France) allows us to define a second species of this new genus. Phylogenetic analysis places Lohuecosuchus in a clade exclusively composed by European Late Cretaceous taxa. This new clade, defined here as Allodaposuchidae, is recognized as the sister group of Hylaeochampsidae, also comprised of European Cretaceous forms. Allodaposuchidae and Hylaeochampsidae are grouped in aclade identified as the sister group of Crocodylia, the only crocodyliform lineage that reaches our days. Morelladon beltrani gen. et sp. nov. is diagnosed by eight autapomorphic features. Theset of autapomorphies includes: very elongated and vertical neural spines of the dorsal vertebrae, midline keel on ventral surface of the second to fourth sacral vertebrae restricted to the anterior half of the centrum, a posterodorsally inclined medial ridge on the postacetabular process of the ilium that meets its dorsal margin and distal end of the straight ischial shaft laterally expanded, among others. Phylogenetic analyses reveal that the new Iberian form is more closely related to its synchronic and sympatric contemporary European taxa Iguanodon bernissartensis and Mantellisaurus atherfieldensis, known from Western Europe, than to other Early Cretaceous Iberian styracosternans (Delapparentia turolensis and Proavaldearinnoensis). The recognition of Morelladon beltrani gen. et sp. nov. indicates that the Iberian Peninsula was home to a highly diverse medium to large bodied styracosternan assemblage during the Early Cretaceous.Publicación New Iguanodon bernissartensis Axial Bones (Dinosauria, Ornithopoda) from the Early Cretaceous of Morella, Spain(MDPI, 2022-01-18) Gasulla, José Miguel; Escaso Santos, Fernando; Narváez Padilla, Iván; Sanz, José Luis; Ortega Coloma, Francisco JavierIguanodon bernissartensis is the most frequently and widely cited styracosternan ornithopod in Western Europe during the Early Cretaceous, although some of these assignments likely need to be revised to establish the true distribution of the taxon. Here, we describe a new specimen of I. bernissartensis from the upper Barremian of the Iberian Peninsula. Based on the unique combination of shared characters, the new specimen from the Arcillas de Morella Formation at Morella locality (Castellón, Spain) can be confidently referred to Iguanodon bernissartensis. These characters include parallel-sided anterior and posterior margins of the dorsal and the caudal neural spines as well as the presence of a ventral keel in the posterior dorsal centra and a broad ventral sulcus in the midline of the central surface of the most posterior sacral vertebrae. This new evidence of Iguanodon bernissartensis reinforces the knowledge about styracosternan ornithopods as the most frequently recorded dinosaur group in the Arcillas de Morella Formation.Publicación A new spinosaurid theropod (Dinosauria: Megalosauroidea) from the upper Barremian of Vallibona, Spain: Implications for spinosaurid diversity in the Early Cretaceous of the Iberian Peninsula(ELSEVIER, 2020-02-01) Malafaia, Elisabete; Gasulla, José Miguel; Escaso Santos, Fernando; Narváez Padilla, Iván; Sanz, Jose Luis; Ortega Coloma, Francisco JavierA new medium-sized theropod dinosaur from the Arcillas de Morella Formation (upper Barremian) in Vallibona (Castellón, Spain) is described based on a partial skeleton. Vallibonavenatrix cani, gen. et sp. nov., is diagnosed by five autapomorphies: moderately high dorsal neural spines relative to the centrum height, the presence of deep pleurocoelous fossae and pneumatic foramina in the sacral vertebrae, a strongly pneumatic ilium with large internal cameras, the presence of a broad and flat platform on the ventromedial surface of the postacetabular blade of the ilium, and the strong ventral torsion of the ischium diaphysis. Phylogenetic analysis recovered Vallibonavenatrix cani as a spinosaurid megalosauroid and revealed that the new Iberian form is more closely related to Gondwanan spinosaurines, such as Spinosaurus, Irritator or Angaturama and the Asian taxon Ichthyovenator than it is to its synchronic contemporary European taxon Baryonyx walkeri. The Gondwanan or Asian affinities of Vallibonavenatrix indicate a complex palaeobiogeographic pattern and may be interpreted simultaneously as evidence for contact between Europe and North Africa and between Europe and Asia before the Aptian. This record, as generally occurs in other geographic areas, is mainly represented by isolated teeth, probably due to the distinctive features of the dentition of these theropods. However, cranial and postcranial elements attributed to spinosaurids have been described and reported from different Iberian fossil sites. The currently known record of these theropods spans from the upper Hauterivian to the lower Aptian of the Cameros and Maestrazgo basins in Eastern Spain whereas it is early Barremian in age in the Lusitanian Basin of Western Portugal. Spinosaurid remains from the Iberian fossil record were traditionally attributed to Baryonyx, firstly described in the upper Barremian–lower Aptian of United Kingdom. However, the recent description of a specimen collected in the locality of Santa Águeda (Vallibona, Castellón), from sediments of the Morella Formation, implies the presence of a new taxon with a combination of derived features more closely related with some Gondwanan spinosaurines than with Baryonyx. Therefore, the currently known Iberian spinosaurid record would be made up of at least three taxa: Baryonyx (or a closely related baryonychine), the spinosaurine Vallibonavenatrix cani, and possibly Camarillasaurus cirugedae, which was recently re-interpreted as belonging to a megalosauroid tentatively related with spinosaurids.
