Adolescent Aggression: A Narrative Review on the Potential Impact of Violent Video Games
(MDPI, 2025-02-18) Borrego Ruiz, Alejandro; Juan J. Borrego
Background: Exposure to violent content through video games can shape perceptions of aggression as normative or acceptable, potentially desensitizing adolescents to violence and increasing the likelihood that they will engage in aggressive behavior in their real-world interactions. This narrative review examines the relationship between violent video games (VVGs) and youth aggression, addressing (i) VVG exposure through the lens of Social Learning Theory and the General Aggression Model; (ii) the biological determinants of aggressive behavior, including neurophysiological correlates and the potential modulatory role of the gut microbiome; (iii) and current evidence on the influence of VVG exposure on adolescent aggression. Results: VVG exposure may promote moral disengagement and reinforce aggressive behavior through rewarding violent actions, potentially leading to real-life aggression. Exposure to VVGs increases aggression by elevating cortisol levels, activating the sympathetic nervous system, stimulating the brain’s reward system, and disrupting neurotransmitter balance. Alterations in gut microbiome composition could occur as a result of engaging in VVGs, potentially mirroring the physiological responses observed in violent real-world activities. The relationship between VVGs and aggression among adolescents has been widely explored, with studies generally indicating that VVG exposure can lead to desensitization to violence, reduced empathy, and diminished prosocial behavior. VVGs have also been linked to both bullying perpetration and victimization dynamics among adolescents, contributing to mental health issues, which in turn exacerbate problematic gaming behaviors. Conclusions: While there is evidence suggesting that exposure to VVGs is associated with increased adolescent aggression, discrepancies in the literature highlight the need for further research aimed at improving our understanding of this phenomenon. The studies on this topic reveal significant limitations, including a predominance of cross-sectional designs, methodological shortcomings, small sample sizes, and challenges in generalizing results. Factors such as the developmental stages of the participants, the exclusion of females, and unmeasured variables during long follow-up periods further complicate interpretations. Moreover, parental responsibility and the effectiveness of age ratings require closer examination.

Ethnic-Cultural Bullying Among Adolescents: Key Insights from Global Evidence
(Japan Bilingual Publishing Co., 2025-06) Borrego Ruiz, Alejandro
Ethnic-cultural bullying is based on perceived differences such as country of origin, cultural background, or skin color, and is rooted in broader dynamics of discrimination and social exclusion. However, despite the growing body of literature, its visibility and understanding remain relatively limited. This narrative review examines the current state of knowledge on ethnic-cultural bullying among adolescents, focusing on its defining features, associated factors, dynamics, and consequences. In addition, it places special emphasis on two underexplored associated areas of pivotal significance: humiliation as a potential key emotional outcome and digital technologies as a contextual amplifier of its occurrence and progression. Finally, this review also discusses the implications of these insights for the development of effective interventions and policy measures. Ethnic-cultural bullying constitutes a global phenomenon that is driven by explicit racial and cultural discrimination, involving both direct aggression and subtle exclusion. Protective factors such as empathy, teacher tolerance, and inclusive peer norms can reduce the risk, while migrant status and visible ethnic markers increase vulnerability. Victims of ethnic-cultural bullying often face stigma, secondary victimization, mental health issues, increased substance use, and higher suicide risk. Humiliation is an emotion closely related to bullying dynamics, but also a culturally charged phenomenon that perpetuates intergroup divisions and stigmatization. Digital technologies potentially contribute to increased dynamics of ethnic-cultural bullying, especially among minority youth. Effective interventions against ethnic-cultural bullying must be identity-aware and grounded in scientific evidence. Ultimately, comprehensive, intersectional, and culturally informed approaches are necessary to address its complex social and psychological impacts

Influence of human gut microbiome on the healthy and the neurodegenerative aging
(Elsevier, 2024-07-27) Borrego García, Juan José ; Borrego Ruiz, Alejandro
The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in host health throughout the lifespan by influencing brain function during aging. The microbial diversity of the human gut microbiome decreases during the aging process and, as a consequence, several mechanisms increase, such as oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammatory response, and microbial gut dysbiosis. Moreover, evidence indicates that aging and neurodegeneration are closely related; consequently, the gut microbiome may serve as a novel marker of lifespan in the elderly. In this narrative study, we investigated how the changes in the composition of the gut microbiome that occur in aging influence to various neuropathological disorders, such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and Parkinson’s disease (PD); and which are the possible mechanisms that govern the relationship between the gut microbiome and cognitive impairment. In addition, several studies suggest that the gut microbiome may be a potential novel target to improve hallmarks of brain aging and to promote healthy cognition; therefore, current and future therapeutic interventions have been also reviewed.

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation as a Tool for Therapeutic Modulation of Neurological and Mental Disorders
(SciBase Journals, 2024) Borrego Ruiz, Alejandro
Neurological, psychiatric, and psychological disorders are highly prevalent in the world population, but available pharmacological treatments cause numerous side effects, and also there is an elevated rate of treatment-resistant patients. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiome is implicated in several neurological and mental disorders and, consequently, restoring the imbalance of the gut microbiome can improve the symptoms associated with these conditions. One method of achieving the gut homeostasis is through fecal microbiota transplantation. This approach has been successfully applied in the treatment of microbial pathogens, such as Clostridioides difficile, and as a therapeutic tool in various gastrointestinal diseases. However, its application for the treatment of neuropsychiatric and psychological disorders has been largely unexplored. This review aims to present a summary of studies that have used fecal microbiota transplantation in order to treat neurological and mental disorders; therefore, the mechanisms underlying this particular technique are reviewed, and its influence on the recipient intestinal microbiome is also analyzed.

Nutritional and Microbial Strategies for Treating Acne, Alopecia, and Atopic Dermatitis
(MPDI, 2024-10-20) Borrego, Juan J.; Borrego Ruiz, Alejandro; Guandalini, Stephano
Background/Objectives: Diet is one of the major determinants of the composition and function of the gut microbiome, and diverse studies have established directional connections between gut microbiome dysbiosis and skin dyshomeostasis. Furthermore, a significant link between the gut and certain skin-related disorders has been reported. This work reviews the mechanisms underlying the relationship between nutritional factors, gut microbiome, and certain skin diseases such as acne vulgaris, alopecia, and atopic dermatitis. In addition, it explores how the modulation of the gut microbiome and human skin through diet and various microbial strategies, including probiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation, may serve as future treatments for skin diseases, possibly replacing traditional methods such as antibiotic, topical corticosteroid, and laser therapies. Results: The adequate intake of certain foods can promote a balanced gut microbiome, potentially reducing skin inflammation and improving overall skin health, while poor dietary choices may lead to worse outcomes by disrupting gut homeostasis. In this regard, diets high in antioxidants, fiber, and phytonutrients appear to be beneficial for enhancing skin health and preventing associated comorbidities. In addition, the administration of probiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics in the treatment of cutaneous diseases has been shown to restore skin dyshomeostasis and to improve the symptoms of the reviewed skin conditions. Conclusions: Consuming a healthy, plant-based diet can reduce skin inflammation and enhance overall skin health. Although the application of probiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics has demonstrated promise in modulating inflammation, enhancing tissue regeneration, and inhibiting pathogenic colonization, further research is required.
