    DISCOvering Spanish Sonnets: A Circular Reading Experience

    With DISCO, the DIachronic Spanish Sonnet COrpus, we collected 4085 sonnets, from the 15th to the 19th centuries, including canonical and lesser-studied authors from both Spain and Latin- America, with detailed author metadata, metrics, rhyme-scheme and enjambment annotations. The dataset is available on public repositories, offered in plain text and TEI, and enriched with RDFa, a linked-data format. The corpus was intended for research and teaching, as well as for non-specialist use. Some questions naturally emerge: How can we easily navigate this corpus and its rich metadata? How can we identify trends thanks to its annotations? How can users not proficient in XML query languages and linked data benefit from such a dataset? To address these issues, we have created DISCOver, a user-friendly web interface to explore the DISCO corpus. It was conceived as a means to help students, researchers, and readers overall, making the corpus accessible to a wider audience. The interface displays literary annotations on individual texts as well as quantitative data on user-defined subcorpora. In turn, from the aggregated data we can go back to the texts the data are based on. Thus, the interface helps us assess the features of individual texts in the context of quantitative data about larger parts of the corpus, and vice-versa. It also helps us nuance hypotheses based on aggregate data by consulting the texts they are derived from.

    Validation of a metadata application profile domain model

    The development of Metadata Application Profiles is done in several phases. According to the Me4MAP method, one of these phases is the creation of the domain model. This paper reports the validation process of a domain model developed under the project POSTDATA - Poetry Standardization and Linked Open Data. The development of the domain model ran with two steps of construction and two of validation. The validation steps drew on the participation of specialists in European poetry and the use of real resources. On the first validation we used tables with information about resources related properties and for which the experts had to fill certain fields like, for examples, the values. The second validation used a XML framework to control the input of values in the model. The validation process allowed us to find and fix flaws in the domain model that would otherwise have been passed to the Description Set Profile and possibly would only be found after implementing the application profile in a real case.

    Towards Interoperability in the European Poetry Community: The Standardization of Philological Concepts

    This paper stems from the Poetry Standardization and Linked Open Data project (POSTDATA). As its name reveals, one of the main aims of POSTDATA is to provide a means to publish European poetry (EP) data as Linked Open Data (LOD). Thus, developing a metadata application profile (MAP) as a common semantic model to be used by the EP community is a crucial step of this project. This MAP will enhance interoperability among the community members in particular, and among the EP community and other contexts in general (e.g. bibliographic records). This paper presents the methodology followed in the process of defining the concepts of the domain model of this MAP, as well as some issues that arise when labeling philological terms.

    Esta contribución surge en el contexto de desarrollo del corpus de sonetos DISCO (Diachronic Spanish Sonnet Corpus), un corpus de 4530 sonetos en español compuestos entre el siglo xvi y el xx por autores de diversas procedencias (Europa, Latinoamérica y Filipinas). Este recurso contiene las anotaciones de diferentes fenómenos de versificación que han sido obtenidas a partir de técnicas del procesamiento del lenguaje natural (PLN). En este artículo presentamos cómo los resultados de la anotación automática pueden ser utilizados para detectar problemas de transmisión textual. Uno de los objetivos de esta contribución es el de proporcionar claves sobre posibles flujos de trabajo que, ayudándose de herramientas de PLN, permitan detectar posibles errores textuales, centrando así los esfuerzos de revisión manual en pasajes concretos.

    This presentation stems from the Poetry Standardization and Linked Open Data project (POSTDATA, www.postdata.linhd.es). As its name reveals, one of the main aims of POSTDATA is to provide a means to publish European poetry data as Linked Open Data (LOD). Thus, one of the milestones of the project is to equip the community of practise of European Poetry with the required instruments for exchanging knowledge in the Semantic Web, even when languages and theoretical backgrounds differ. Even if the quest for interoperability is the foundation of POSTDATA, the project is also developing a complex framework to aid researchers in the literary analysis of poetry. In this line of work, we are designing a set of tools that combine natural language processing systems and quantitative text analysis methods.

    Intermedial Adaptation Strategies When Setting Poems to Music

    There are several ways to adapt a poem to a new medium and create a song based on it, such as a simple reference, narrative continuation of the poem, parody or other reflection on its content or form. One of the most common methods is, undoubtedly, setting poetic texts to music with minimal intervention, such as transferring verses, repeating them, or even eliminating them. It is commonly thought that this kind of musical adaptation preserves the poem and gives it a new life in another medium, but studies of which textual mechanisms come into play and why are scarce. This work presents an analysis through textual collation of 65 poem–song pairs, to analyse the types of modification that occur most frequently and, within them, to examine critically which are the criteria that determine the choice to add, delete, or repeat verses or other sequences. To this end, we worked with the corpus provided by the PoeMAS project, which collects, in a comprehensive, publicly available database, a wide variety of Spanish lyrics (from 1975 onward) based on poems. Using this corpus, a pairwise collation of the poems and their song adaptations was carried out in order to examine the textual differences between a poem and each of its adaptations. We have drawn from the theories of intersemiotic translation (Jakobson 1959; Romano 1994, 1999) and intermediality (Rajewsky 2005; Wolf 1999) to propose a formal classification for the types of change that occur most frequently and analyse them in our digital corpus. The pairwise collation of song–poem texts and the classification of changes using this taxonomy allowed us to reach conclusions about text modifications and about the criteria underlying them in lyrics, explaining therefore why and when some lines or sequences are repeated, suppressed, added or changed.

    Poesía, interoperabilidad y estándares para el tratamiento de datos poéticos. Una aproximación desde el proyecto POSTDATA

    Este panel integra y agrupa varias aproximaciones tecnológicas al tratamiento computacional de la poesía, que se suman y se trabajan en paralelo dentro del proyecto POSTDATA (www.postdata.linhd.es), un proyecto financiado por la Comisión Europea a través de su programa ERC Starting Grant, que busca la interoperabilidad de datos poéticos procedentes de diferentes fuentes, tradiciones y corpora mediante la utilización de estándares tecnológicos: los datos enlazados y la creación de un perfil de aplicación para el análisis poético; la utilización de estándares existentes en el ámbito de las Humanidades Digitales, como el TEI y la automatización de los procesos de análisis de los textos y específicamente de la poesía, gracias a la utilización combinada de las tecnologías del lenguaje, el aprendizaje automático y el análisis estadístico de los textos. El panel consiste en una presentación de los resultados obtenidos hasta el momento mediante 1) la presentación del proceso de construcción del modelo de datos poéticos obtenido tras realizar el análisis de veinte (20) bases de datos de proyectos dedicados a poesía, y que servirá como base para la creación de un perfil de aplicación de metadatos; 2) la recolección y organización de los vocabularios controlados que cada una de las diferentes tradiciones poéticas, lingüísticas y culturales utiliza para nombrar y clasificar su información, gracias al uso de una herramienta común de gestión de estos vocabularios (TemaTres); 3) el análisis de los problemas específicos del modelado de la rima , y 4) los nuevos retos del proyecto y las líneas que están en marcha, como la cuestión de la transformación de los datos en XML/TEI para datos en RDF teniendo como base el modelo semántico del perfil de aplicación de metadatos, o la definición de los algoritmos que configurarán el “PoetryLAB”, espacio de análisis y experimentación con PLN y tecnologías del lenguaje que buscan automatizar el proceso de análisis poético.
