En las últimas cuatro décadas, Argentina ha experimentado ciclos económicos recurrentes caracterizados por profundas crisis, periodos de crecimiento efímeros y frecuentes cambios en la orientación de su política económica. Estos han incluido desde una fuerte intervención estatal, proteccionismo comercial, alta inflación y restricciones cambiarias, hasta esfuerzos más recientes orientados a la desregulación de los mercados, la liberalización del comercio y una mayor apertura económica. En este contexto, surge una pregunta central: ¿en qué medida la libertad económica y la apertura comercial pueden impulsar un crecimiento económico sostenido en Argentina? La llegada al poder del presidente Javier Milei en diciembre de 2023 marcó un nuevo punto de inflexión en este debate, ya que su agenda de reformas liberales ha reavivado los debates estructurales sobre el rol del Estado, la competitividad de la economía argentina y su integración en la economía global. Este trabajo analiza la relación entre libertad económica, apertura y crecimiento, situando los esfuerzos de reforma actuales en el contexto histórico más amplio de la evolución económica de Argentina durante los últimos 40 años.
Over the past four decades, Argentina has experienced recurrent economic cycles characterized by deep crises, short-lived growth periods, and frequent shifts in economic policy. These have ranged from strong state intervention, trade protectionism, high inflation, and foreign exchange restrictions to more recent efforts toward market deregulation, trade liberalization, and economic openness. Within this context, a central question arises: to what extent can economic freedom and trade openness foster sustained economic growth in Argentina? The rise to power of President Javier Milei in December 2023 marked a new turning point in this debate, as his liberal reform agenda has reignited structural discussions on the role of the state, Argentina’s competitiveness, and its integration into the global economy. This paper examines the relationship between economic freedom, openness, and growth, situating the current reform efforts within the broader historical context of Argentina’s economic evolution over the past 40 years.
