The most severe accident of buses and coaches is the rollover. Regulation 66 allows the verification by means of simulation, so the accuracy of the mathematical models is a recurrent issue over the last decades. The current models require and additional test of parts of the structure to verify the hypothesis made in the calculation. This work proposes a validated methodology to develop finite element models using SHELL as the element type, including failure criteria based on material strain. Several targets have been positioned in the tested structure, so their movement can be measured with a video tracking software. The comparison between the deformed shape in both test and simulation shows high correlation during the whole deformation process, even the formation of plastic hinges and cracks in the material in the same points along the structure. This presented methodology creates high accurate models with no need for additional tests.
