Publicación Britain’s Terra Nullius: A Historical and Cultural Study of Aboriginal Australia through Sally Morgan’s My Place and Robert Hughes’ The Fatal Shore(Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (España). Departamento de Filologías Extranjeras y sus Lingüísticas, 2021-06-01) Press, Imogen; Guerrero Llorente, IsabelThis dissertation presents a historical and cultural study of Aboriginal Australia through the literary analysis of the novels My Place (1987) by Sally Morgan and The Fatal Shore (1986) by Robert Hughes. The use of a postcolonial methodology in analysing the literary works gives new meaning to the texts as the historical context of British colonialism is acknowledged. The methodology also highlights the existence of colonial discourse in literature. A comparative and contrastive analysis for the representation of Aboriginal Australians in both novels shows there is no fixed form of identity or portrayal. The way theatre adaptations are conceived out of other literary works (like novels) is also a considerable topic in the field of literary research, which is closely linked to the theory of theatre and performance. Little Women and Jane Eyre are two feminist literary classics of the Anglo-Saxon literature that have been adapted to the stage in countless occasions. One of the main objects of this essay is the exploration of how two stage adapters of these novels, Marian de Forest for Little Women and Jay Richards for Jane Eyre, have shaped their works. That is, to what extent they have included the feminist approach of the original authors, as well as the reasons behind their choice.Publicación Festivalizar el teatro. Al representar sus piezas en un festival, estas acogen nuevos significados, dando lugar a un acontecimiento teatral cuya producción, recepción y representación se ve alterada por el metaacontecimiento donde se enmarcan. En estas páginas exploramos los significados de estos encuentros, su evolución, elementos y características definitorias para, tras ello, acercarnos a la celebración del dramaturgo inglés en diversos festivales de teatro a través de los siglos y ahondar en las características de estos como acontecimientos culturales y artísticos. De forma paralela, este análisis nos permite examinar el debate sobre la identidad del autor que se ha originado en el seno de estos acontecimientos. Este volumen se suma a la corriente de estudios de Shakespeare y los festivales de teatro, proveyendo de un marco teórico e histórico que permite definir qué es un festival de teatro, así como determinar la relación entre la celebración de Shakespeare y este tipo de acontecimientos, explorándolos como piezas clave de la escena teatral y cultural de los siglos XX y XXI en Occidente. Para ello, el primer bloque, «Los festivales de teatro en su definición teórica», elabora un marco para acercarnos a estos encuentros como acontecimiento cultural. To stand out in the saturated festival market, Shakespeare productions emphasise their popular appeal, rebranding Shakespeare as a simultaneously familiar and, at the same time, new product. The neoliberal market conditions of the festival impose a series of limitations and, consequently, Shakespeare productions need to adjust to time and space restrictions and reduce their casts and sets. Shakespeare productions, therefore, negotiate these constraints in order to attract an audience, a tension that has given rise to specific theatrical approaches to Shakespeare in performance. The main objective of this article is therefore to provide an understanding of Fringe Shakespeare, that is, the theatrical events featuring Shakespeare in performance at the Edinburgh Fringe whose distinctive characteristics are determined by the festival context. To do so, the first part of the article reviews the concept of fringe theatre, examines the tension between innovation and material constraints and explores the reasons why so many companies decide to stage Shakespeare at the Edinburgh Fringe. The second part examines the performing trends in Fringe Shakespeare: appropriations, solo shows, new writing, adaptations into unusual genres and parodies. This will shed light on Fringe Shakespeare and its definition as a theatrical event in the first decades of the twenty-first century.Publicación Homosexuality on page and on screen: Rope, Strangers on a Train, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof(Universidad de Educación a Distancia (UNED), 2024-10-08) Vasiltsova Vasiltsova, Olga; Guerrero Llorente, IsabelThis MA dissertation examines the representation of homosexuality in the works of Patrick Hamilton Rope (1929), Patricia Highsmith Strangers on a Train (1950), and Tennessee Williams Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1954), and their subsequent film adaptations by directors Alfred Hitchcock in 1948 and 1951 and Richard Brooks in 1958. The dissertation has three aims: first, to carry out a comparative analysis of the portrayal of this topic in the original narratives and their cinematic versions; second, to demonstrate the impact of prevailing homophobic policies and culturally constructed stereotypes on its presentation in literature and film; and third, to assess the effectiveness of the strategies employed by the authors and film makers to depict homosexuality. The methodology includes an in-depth literature review on the selected narratives and their film adaptations and an interdisciplinary approach that combines queer literary theory, intertextuality, and subtexts, as well as adaptation theory and film studies. Chapter 1 establishes the theoretical framework, provides an overview of existing studies of the selected texts, and explains how the previous research aligns with the stated objectives. Chapter 2 examines the socio-political contexts of the two historical periods in which Rope, Strangers on a Train, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof were created, as well as how dominant ideologies influenced the development of queer imagery in literature and on screen. Chapter 3 examines the similarities and differences in the portrayal of homosexuality in the original texts and their film versions, identifying and evaluating the different strategies used to reveal or conceal it. The dissertation draws the conclusion that prevailing gender stereotypes and political discourse conditioned the nuanced portrayal of homosexuality in the selected works both on page and screen. It also demonstrates that, despite the differences between the literary and cinematic mediums, Rope, Strangers on a Train, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof offer nuanced portrayals of oppressed homosexual individuals, highlighting their complex experiences in society.Publicación Latin Female Writers in the American Southwest. Departamento de Filologías Extranjeras y sus Lingüísticas, 2021-06) Cuartero Arina, Raquel; Guerrero Llorente, IsabelThis TFG discusses the main challenges that Latin and Chicano population living in the southwest of the United States have been facing since this territory became part of the States through an analysis of the main works by three female authors with Latin ascent: Gloria Alzandúa (1987), Kali Fajardo-Anstine (2019) and Yessika Salgado (2017, 2018 and 2019). These female writers feel pride of their roots against an Anglo predominant culture and share similar concerns and experiences in their writings that are developed in the different sections of the paper: issues related to historical events, such as the change of borders between the United States and Mexico, the language issues and the migratory movements; the discrimination due to race because being mixed raced or Latin; the patriarchal society that relegates women to a domestic role; and the situation of social and economic instability derived from belonging to a low class. The three authors explain their concerns about historical changes, race, gender and class, and confront them vindicating their origin with dignity and pride.Publicación ‘My native English now I must forgo’: Global Shakespeare at the Edinburgh International Festival(2020-08-27) Guerrero Llorente, IsabelThis article focuses on Shakespeare productions in languages other than English throughout the history of the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF). It aims to demonstrate that there has been an evolution towards global Shakespeare at the EIF, and that productions of William Shakespeare’s plays have been both an active agent and a product of the interconnectedness of theatre cultures in international theatre festivals. The article considers three categories that illustrate the evolution of Shakespeare festival productions: Shakespeare without his language, heteroglossic Shakespeare and new-brand Shakespeare. This chapter turns the metaphor into reality with the study of the connection between Othello and puppet theatre. To do so, the chapter focuses on three productions: Che cosa sono le nuvole (1968), a short film by Pier Paolo Pasolini, O-telo (2011)¸ by the theatre company Viajeinmóvil, and the performance of Othello in the series Complete Works: Table Top Shakespeare (2015), by Forced Entertainment. These productions engage with different European puppet traditions and offer new insights into the play that have contributed to the dissemination of Shakespeare’s Othello throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.Publicación Same-Sex Marriage Legislation in the United States and Television Series: An Analysis of "Glee"(Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (España). This shift coincided with the emergence of television series with LGBT characters in leading roles. The objective of this project is to examine the positive effect that one of these series, Glee, might have had in that legalization. For this purpose, the most relevant theoretical approaches, such as those based in the contact hypothesis or the parasocial interaction theory, have been analyzed. Departamento de Filologías Extranjeras y sus Lingüísticas, 2024-09-10) Marques Simão, Lurdes Maria; Guerrero Llorente, IsabelThis TFG aims to critically analyse how Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, an iconic work of the modern American theater, is adapted to film in countries outside the United States. In order to do this, three screen adaptations are examined: the 1963 German TV film Der Tod eines Handlungsreisenden, directed by Michael Kehlmann; the 1979 Swedish TV film En Handelsresandes död, directed by Bo Widerberg; and the 2016 Iranian-French feature film The Salesman, written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. While there is a certain number of works dealing with the American film adaptations of Miller’s theatrical text, very few academic research has been conducted so far on film adaptations from outside the Anglo-American world. Moving away from a narrow comparative analysis between filmic adaptations and source playtext, which solely judges fidelity or infidelity to the “original” and value adaptations as minor artistic products, the aim of this essay is to examine these directors’ choices by focusing on the main narrative, thematic and aesthetic features of their film adaptations. The analysis is carried out within the framework of adaptation studies, resorting to the pioneering and influential works of Robert Stam (2000, 2005) and Linda Hutcheon (2013). The findings of the analysis reveal that in the adaptation of Miller’s theatrical text each film director proceeds through distinct creative decisions, reworking the story according to a process that involves both reproduction and transformation, while also incorporating key elements of realism and/or expressionism in the play. Making use of distinct resources and film techniques, these film-makers’ creative choices, while also shaped by specific contexts, make each one of these adaptations a unique artistic statement of Death of a Salesman.
