    This paper will touch on how and why we communicate humour while concentrating on the emotions provoked and expressed by its use. A look back through the history of humour studies allow us to realise that until recently this field had been somewhat neglected and if taken into consideration at all, seen as negative and non-important in the scheme of things. It will also permit an overview of the changing status of humour in society as a whole. Nowadays humour is seen to have both positive and negative aspects on receivers, which I endeavour to explain and categorise, while outlining their effects.
