Resumen
A feeling of displacement is one of the most recognisable characteristics experienced by people with Alzheimer’s Disease; cognitive deterioration causes loss of spatial and temporal identification, as well as the erasure of memories. This becomes evident in how the person with Alzheimer’s lives (in) their house with a sense of estrangement. In this disease, the house, formerly associated with meaning, identity, and history, becomes a non-place. This is what we could call ‘unhousing’, that is, the person with Alzheimer’s becomes free from the house as a constraining place loaded with memories. Moreover, unhousing is reinforced when the person with Alzheimer’s is moved to a residential facility. This chapter explores unhousing associated with Alzheimer’s Disease in contemporary US fiction. To that purpose, I will focus on the house and residential facilities as becoming non-places due to the person’s spatial memory loss. I will analyse two novels, Turn of Mind (2011) by Alice LaPlante and We Are Not Ourselves (2014) by Matthew Thomas, where the protagonists are people with Alzheimer’s Disease.
