El epitafio del médico M. Ulpius M. fil. Sporus, aparecido en Viterbo en el siglo XVI y
actualmente desaparecido, constituye un documento de gran valor para el estudio de
la actividad médica en época romana. Con más detalle de lo habitual, la inscripción
informa de la carrera profesional de un facultativo, desarrollada en parte en el seno del
ejército y en parte en el ámbito urbano. Además, el término salariarius que señala su
estatus de médico retribuido por una ciudad remite al ámbito castrense, permitiendo
plantear hipótesis sobre las condiciones en que este médico entró a formar parte del
ejército romano.
The epitaph of a physician called M. Ulpius M. fil. Sporus, found in Viterbo in the 16th century and currently lost, is a document of great value for the study of medical activity in the Roman world. With unusual detail, the inscription informs about the professional life of a doctor who developed his career both in the army and in the urban context. Moreover, the term salariarius, which states his status as municipal doctor, refers to the military sphere and allows to suggest a hypothesis about the way this doctor joined the Roman army.
