In this paper we analyse the alignment patterns of H prenuclear accents in Spanish so as to examine whether prenuclear rises in declarative sentences can be interpreted as a sequence of an L* pitch accent and an H word edge tone. A production test was designed consisting of 20 pairs of ambiguous sentences with a different word boundary location (e.g. bebo vinos “I drink wines” vs. ve bovinos “(s)he sees cows”). Sentences were read by four speakers of Peninsular Spanish. The results showed that for all speakers the H is always anchored right after the accented syllable. However, H alignment does seem to be affected by the stress distribution of words, since the F0 peak is more displaced in proparoxytones that in paroxytones and in paroxytones than in oxytones, suggesting the presence of a loosely aligned H word edge tone. Furthermore, two perception tests (a discrimination test and an identification test) were carried out to investigate whether H alignment can be a helpful cue to identify otherwise ambiguous sentences. The results showed that words with a stress on the penultimate or antepenultimate syllable are more easily distinguished than words with a final accent, which indicates that H alignment differences due to word position are an important cue for word-boundary identification.

Tonal Structure of Post-Local L in English and Catalan
(Asociación Española de Estudios Anglo-Norteamericanos. AEDEAN, 2003-01-01) Estebas Vilaplana, Eva
The aim of thls paper is to investigate the tonal structure of narrow focus signalled by accentual means in English and in Catalan. In particular , it analyses the status of the f O valley in the H(igh)-L( ow) movement observed after the focal constituent. In both languages, the H is interpreted as an H* pitch accent given its alignment within the accented syllable of the focal word. However, the nature ofL is unclear since it can be: analysed as the trailing tone of a bitonalaccent (H*+L)ora phraseaccent (H*L-), Thestatus ofL is investigated in words with different stress distributions { oxytones, paroxytones, and proparoxytones) in subject and verb focal positions. An examination of the timing of L with respect to the accented s)ilable demonstrates that in Catalan the L corresponds to a phrase accent since it is anchored at the end of the word irrespective of the number of post-accented syllables. In English, on the other hand, the L is better interpreted as the trailing tone of H*+L, due to its fixeded distance with respect tothe accented s)ilable, These res ults confirm the assignment of focus at phrase final position in Romance languages as opposed toGermanic languages.

The role of duration in intonational modelling. A comparative study of Peninsular and Argentinean Spanish
(Asociación Española de Lingüística Aplicada (AESLA), 2010-01-01) Estebas Vilaplana, Eva
The aim of this study is to compare the intonation of neutral declaratives in Peninsular Spanish (PS) and in Argentinean Spanish (AS) by means of the Autosegmental-Metrical framework. Previous works showed that both varieties differ in the production of both nuclear and pre-nuclear accents. In this study we demonstrate that there is a more robust parameter that contributes to differentiate neutral declaratives in PS and AS, namely, the duration of the nuclear syllable. 600 utterances with one and two accents were analyzed. The pitch traces of PS and AS obtained in this study show similar characteristics in the two languages. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the duration of the nuclear syllable is significantly longer in AS than in PS indicating that duration seems to be more important than intonation to distinguish between AS and PS declaratives. These results are important to implement Spanish intonation to speech synthesis and speech recognition systems.

Phonetic and phonological properties of the final pitch accent in Catalan declaratives
    (2003-03-27) Estebas Vilaplana, Eva
This paper examines the phonetic and phonological properties of the last pitch accent in Catalan single and multi-stressed neutral declaratives. Traditionally, the different F0 patterns observed in single stressed structures (clear F0 peak) and in multistressed structures (progressively falling slope or a strongly lowered F0 peak) have been subject to different phonological interpretations (H* and L* respectively). In this study, acoustic and perceptual evidence is provided to show that the different F0 patterns should be interpreted as realisational differences of the same phonological entity (H*).

Automatic Assessment of Non-Native Prosody by Measuring Distances on Prosodic Label Sequences
(International Speech Communication Association, 2017-08-20) Estebas Vilaplana, Eva
The aim of this paper is to investigate how automatic prosodic labeling systems contribute to the evaluation of non-native pronunciation. In particular, it examines the efficiency of a group of metrics to evaluate the prosodic competence of non-native speakers, based on the information provided by sequences of labels in the analysis of both native and non-native speech. A group of Sp ToBI labels were obtained by means of an automatic labeling system for the speech of native and non-native speakers who read the same texts. The metrics assessed the differences in the prosodic labels for both speech samples. The results showed the efficiency of the metrics to set apart both groups of speakers. Furthermore, they exhibited how nonnative speakers (American and Japanese speakers) improved their Spanish productions after doing a set of listening and repeating activities. Finally, this study also shows that the results provided by the metrics are correlated with the scores given by human evaluators on the productions of the different speakers. Index Terms: Prosody and second language, computer assisted pronuntiation trainning, Prosodic ToBI labeling
