Through Karim and Jamila’s journeys, this work reveals how dysfunctional fathers as well as gender and generational conflicts are the cause of the identity crises and ensuing personal transformation of Kureishi’s characters. These transcultural identities challenge traditional family roles and expectations, and explore alternative kinship networks, defined by shared experiences rather than blood ties.
