A work deeply tied to the historical context in which it was written, it has maintained its relevance due to the universal themes it addresses. However, a deeper layer of analysis might show how Steinbeck’s novel, as an artistic creation, is a cultural product that conveys and participates in the construction of the prevalent ideology of its time. More specifically, it can be embedded within a general change in mainstream economic management—a shift towards greater state intervention and the regulation of markets.
