This Final Degree Project studies Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s role as a precursor of literary vampirism and the modern vampire figure, putting him within the context of the Victorian Era, highlighting the importance of vampirism literary genre in the literature of the time. It explores the distinctive elements of his work, particularly his ability to merge mystery, esotericism, and Central European legends in stories such as Carmilla, which laid the foundation for the modern vampire myth. The study surfs into the impact on Bram Stoker’s Dracula and connections with other authors, showcasing his influence on the evolution of Gothic Literature and the vampire archetype throughout Contemporary History. Additionally, a feminist perspective is included to examine how he portrayes women in his narratives, highlighting the complexity and symbolism of female characters, and discussing how Carmilla can be considered a protofeminist work in terms of genre studies.
