This chapter presents a novel conceptual and methodological interpre-tation of the relationship between religion and the nationalism of the Franco regime from its genesis to its solidification during the Spanish Civil War. Looking at the topic through a transdisciplinary dialogue between anthropology and cultural history, the chapter examines the relevant manifestations within the scope of popular religiosity—processions, pilgrimages to shrines, other religious acts and holidays—during this period in the rebel zone, analyzing how the authorities in those areas were able to colonize ritual and devotional spaces, leaving a powerful mark on the local imaginaries and instrumentalizing these expressions for their sacralization. In doing so, they used the ritual and symbolic aspects of celebrations to present themselves as the guardians of tradition and "national essences,” two of the ideological matrices of National Catholicism.
