The use of gender-fair language in Spanish has supporters and detractors. Especially the latter claim grammatical arguments to censor its use. However, a pragmatic analysis of the phenomenon has greater explanatory power. The aim of this work is to analyze gender-fair language, especially gender splits or pair coordination and -e marking, from a pragmatic approach instead of using grammatical arguments to characterize it. The use of gender-fair language is proposed as a personal gender deixis like languages that indicate the sex of the participants in the speech acts. Acting on gender with an inclusive purpose responds to the use of formal gender in cases in which it can be considered referential, in human referents, to adapt it to express a deictic gender. Reporting about the participant’s sex in the conversation responds to the need that speakers feel to point out the second person (you). The same pragmatic arguments can be applied both to the analysis of gender splits and to the use of the -e marking. This work defends the idea that the gender-fair language doesn’t misuse Spanish grammatical rules, but rather that speakers take advantage of their grammatical knowledge to express exactly what they want to say.
