Skepticism can be defined as that philosophical position that starts from the impossibility of knowledge on the part of the knowing subject and, as a consequence of this incomprehensibility, it is decided to suspend the judgment (epoché) with one goal: the imperturbability of the soul. There is some inconsistency among historians of philosophy in recognizing who the founder of this philosophical doctrine is; however, Pyrrho of Elis is credited with this mention. We will observe a brief overview of the philosophical tradition of skepticism, beginning with its practical-moral phase and its academic phase in the Hellenistic period, and finally, its late phase during the Hellenistic period. We will then determine whether or not skepticism influenced the medical schools of ancient Greece (Hippocratic) and those of the Hellenistic period in Alexandria, namely, the methodical, empirical, dogmatic, and pneumatic schools. We will review the contributions of three figures of skepticism during the Spanish Renaissance: Francisco Sánchez, Martín Martínez, and Benito Feijoo. Finally, we will address the epistemological positions that prevail in current official medicine (OM), namely, realism and empiricism. We will determine which current approach to OM has been culturally influenced by philosophical skepticism, whether evidence-based medicine (EBM) or narrative medicine (NM).
